Not brewing this weekend
My internet was down because of Tuesday's snowstorm. We only got around to setting it to rights today, so I'm glad to be back.
But with the storm came insanely cold temps in the NYC area, as your fellow Borg members such as John Sand, Beerlableman, Ssorck, and Tabasco won't hesitate to confirm. Wind chills near or below zero!
As a result, my basement is too cold to ferment any ales, and I don't have lager yeast available right now. I've got two batches that were already pretty much done with primary before the cold snap, but I brought Sunday's batch upstairs to the brew closet, since it was only a day in when the temp dropped.
But also, I'm a little burnt out. I would be doing a 5-gallon full-volume AG mash, and that's more work than I want to do this weekend. I'm just tired. So my ingredients will sit another week. Won't harm them. And maybe the temperature will be more conducive to fermenting an ale. If not, I'll have to bring that batch upstairs, and while I don't necessarily want to, I will.
So Sunday I'll just take it easy, bottle the South Ferry Steam Beer, and make a batch of barbecue sauce. I'm almost out of that, and that would really be tragic.

Re: Not brewing this weekend
I have your back.....I may get to brew Sunday since it looks like we might get close to 60 (it's 32 here now and raining-nothing for you guys but a hassle for us).
Looks like Pliny is next up. So, I'll drink to your relaxing and you drink to my drinking while I drink to you drinking to me....ah, you get the picture.
Sorry about the weather. It pretty much sucks all over and I hear later next week its going to be worse. Even 75 miles north of us it got to 13 last night. WE DO NOT LIKE THIS!
Stay safe you snowbirds!

Hmmmm this might be worthy of it's own thread...
...."and make a batch of barbecue sauce".
All BBQers who make their own sauce say AYE.
Hope you enjoy a relaxing and aromatic (BBQ sauce in this case) Sunday FD.

Keeping this in mind, the break may be a blessing in disguise Dave. Getting away, even for a week could inspire you.FedoraDave wrote: But also, I'm a little burnt out.
And in regards to your South Ferry Steam Beer (trademark policing aside ), I'm tapping my keg of Cali Common tonight so I'll hoist one in yer honor.
Re: Not brewing this weekend
Yeah, Dave, I'm off the mash too. Still feeling a little low, plus we're back to frigid temps again. Maybe February.

Never mind, there it is.

The good thing is, I took a gravity reading on the South Ferry this evening, and I hit it right on the screws! And it would seem these colder temps performed a kind of semi-cold crash. This sample was so clear you could watch TV through it! Gonna dry hop it tomorrow morning and get a little more aroma into it, but this is gonna be a primo beer.

fwiw Dave we've had a little cold snap here(cold for here that is) according to the "my radar" app on my pad we're returning to normal winter weather here. at least for the next 5 days, so the warm's coming. here I was thinking I was gonna get out of cutting my grass this winter.

Re: Not brewing this weekend
This is crazy weather. 25 now with no wind after wind yesterday and 15 for a high. Got a few inches of snow, another 1-2 tomorrow. Monday -8, Tuesday -13. -25 and -27 Windchill. Yikes! 20s into 40s in the 2nd week of February, but that's too far out to be useful.
I have over 9,000 posts on "another forum", which means absolutely nothing. Mr. Beer January 2014 Brewer of the Month with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it...

Re: Not brewing this weekend
Here in Va. I did the prep and sparge inside.
It was 15 when I started the mash and 21 when I started the boil outside!
It was only a 2.5-3 gallon batch but I had to boil it on the patio. Stove sucks!
I have an insulated full body coverall that works well, except for the hands and ears!
Coldest brew day since I started brewing, wind is brutal, and BTW, my cooling and fermentation room is 56F!
It's so cold, it froze my grain bag within the 70 feet it took to go to the woods to empty it and back.
Our lows for the rest of the week are supposed to be in the single digits to the upper teens.
Odd for our part of the country, but not unheard of.
I remember times when we didn't get above 30 for 6 weeks at a time!
Send the penguins here! I think they are cool!
