Punked Patriot Pale Ale

I have been meaning to try this, and the 2-1 patriot lager deal and lack of time to do anything more fancy gave me the motivation.

Yeah we all know you should not boil HMEs. But nothing says you can't heat them up to 170 and toss in hops and leave it stand for 20 minutes. That's enough to pasteurize for sure, get a little bit of IBUs out of the hops, and since I did it with the lid on and let it cool down to 150 with the lid on some flashed off flavor and aroma compounds should have re-condensed back into the wort too. (seems to work this way for me from my experience, and I have never gotten DMS doing this).

So simple recipe, 2.5 gallons of beer as a 1.5 gallon partial volume w/cold water top up.

Brought 1.5 gallons of water to a boil in my pot with the lid on so the steam sanitized my pot and lid.
Added 2 cans Patriot Lager (which cost me $14 total due to sale and coupon, I personally would not do this if I paid full price for those things).
When wort was 170, tossed in 1oz Citra hops, commando, and left to stand with the lid on for 20 minutes.
Cooled, topped up in LBC.
Pitched 1 full pack of Nottingham, which will ferment 57-59 degree range.

Nottingham that cool is almost lager like, so it's sort of a pseudo-ipl as much as a pale ale.

Commando hops went right into the fermenter. Been having great luck in the LBC with everything settling down into the cone and pouring clear no matter what I do.

OG was 1.052.
IBUs are god knows what, but probably 40somethingish.
Should have good bit of citra flavor and some aroma based on previous hop stands I've done like this.
Should be very pale, very clean, and dryish.

I have some washed WLP810, I might do something similar for another batch later this week.

Very nice. Simple process, doesn't take too long and will produce good beer. I got the twofer deal also, so I am looking into what to do them next.

I'll probably save a couple of cans for summer and make patersbier out of them... Something like 1 can of patriot, 2 bags of the pale extract, 1/2 oz saaz @30 or @20 (boiled in pale extract and water), and 1/2oz @5 or @flameout, and 3787 or WLP530 for a 2.5 gallon batch. Maybe a bit of maltodextrin to give it more head retention and body. That will make excellent lawnmower beer for the amount of time spent.

And I've got a couple more to play with this winter/spring, I may just double up another pair of them and make an IPL out of them similar to this one but with some other hop and WLP810.

Then just need to figure out what to do with my other 2 bags of pale extract, but I'm sure I can find something to add it to.

EDIT: And I love Nottingham. Even though it cooled down to 56 overnight due to frigid outdoor temps, it's already kicked into high gear.

Sounds good. I did something similar with Simcoe and Amarillo with some old BRA that I got on closeout and it made a good beer. Had I thought about that I might have jumped on the deal, too.

I just bottled this at 1.012.

It tasted really good. Didn't taste the POR. Was all passion fruit and grapefruit from the Citra. Very clean. Bitterness was SNPA like in intensity. I'm pleased.

First time I've actually ever gotten Grapefruit from Citra which is interesting since it seems a lot of people think of it as a grapefruity hop, where I think of it as a musky/tropical fruit hop.

Must be a combo of the process and the clean yeast, as I've always used Citra in wheats and Belgian/saison types of beer, and boiled it for around 20 minutes before.

This sounds right up my alley, but need some clarification on process.

You said you boiled 1.5 gallons of water, then added 2 cans of Patriot Lager......did you add the HME while the heat was still on the boil? or remove from heat, then add HME? then let cool down to 170 then add hops? then allow to continue to cool with lid on to 150?

I think I got it, but wanted to make sure.

I turned off the heat, added the HME, stirred until it was totally integrated, put a thermometer in and brought the temps back up to 170 with gentle heat. The two cans of HME at my basement temps + the stirring took it down lower then that.

If you do it and the temps are higher, then let it cool to 170.

Then toss in the hops, put the lid on, and just let it sit for 20-30 minutes. I'm up in the air on what I like more.

Then cool it and put it in your fermenter, and top up to volume.

I had no trouble with the commando hops in the fermenter, the Nottingham just glued them in the trub when it flocculated.

I busted open one of these.

Wow. I taste no POR flavor at all. Yeah! Clean malt flavors, SNPA like levels of bitterness, and an IPA like grapefruit/peach hop flavor punch in my face, and the aroma of peaches.

It's delicious. Wonder if the 2-1 is still going on, I'll get more.

Cool, I just checked and the 2fer deal is still available. I just bottled my modified patriot the other day. Hoping for the same results.

Only thing I'd do different is add some maltodextrin, or a bit of wheat dme, or steep some carapils depending on if I had extra time to spend. It would improve the head retention. The patriot doesn't seem to have a lot of head forming compounds.

I brewed this exact same thing today, except with Simcoe instead of Citra, and I added 4oz of Maltodextrine.

I'm down to 2 cans of the Patriot now from the 2-1 deal... so what to do...

I'm thinking of making cream ale. Cream of Patriot?
