A Southern winter storm
Laugh at us all you yankees........ The deep south is about to hell our version of a winter storm and people are freaking out (not me).
From Texas to the Carolina's starting sometime early tomorrow and lasting to early Wednesday, they're expecting trouble. Snow and in my area, especially freezing rain and black ice roads with power problems look to be a problem.
We don't have the machinery to tackle what the rest of the country has other than sand to cover some roads. Best thing for us is to stay home. But there are folks waiting in line at the stores like its Armageddon. I laugh in there general direction.
Me, I'll go to work until the roads are about crap and then sneak home and enjoy the wonderful daytime television that I miss each day.

What a crazy winter this has been so far!
Re: A Southern winter storm
Freezing rain sucks no matter where you live. When you have 1/2 inch to 1 inch of ice on everything it can spell disaster. That kind of ice can drop tree limbs and power lines. And then it can take days for the power companies to fix that. Good luck to all you southerners...us northerners will do our best to stay warm. It's supposed to get down to 10 below with wind chills pushing 30 below where I'm at.
Stay warm and safe everyone.

You folks all be careful down there and it will probably pass over kind of fast, so just stay off the roads for a while. I know these kind of conditions can be bad for those that aren't use to it or prepared for it like we are in the snowbelt. This morning going to work was the nastiest driving I've had this year. I drive a Jeep and had it in 4x4, but the wipers couldn't keep up with the blowing snow. Wife was scared getting out of our driveway with her 4x4 (she can't drive but don't say I said it). Just be careful and it will be over soon.

We're supposed to see 1/2" of ice which they say isn't good. They say 1/4" would be bad enough but the extra 1/4" makes a huge difference.
But have no fear, it'll get above 70 this weekend. It's a yo-yo time of year.

Beer-Lord - Our forecast here in Pensacola looks about the same. Funny isn't it? From threat of ice and snow to spring time temps in the span of three days.
Re: A Southern winter storm
My wife and I are laughing at the weatherguys and gals. They switch back and forth between how bad it will be then the next newscast they say it may not even freeze. They all fall over their 'latest models' and the 1970's weather guys did a better job then these folks do with their computer models.
Only the grocery stores make out well in this one. But, I can't blame them for being safe. All we need to happen is one school bus full of kids skidding off a road of ice to make all these jokes dead wrong so I'll try to not to laugh too much at the news guys.

You southerners take care with this weather. That is our usual crap, but we know how to handle it. Even with our experience, crappy weather is dangerous and can, no, WILL bite u in the backside when u least expect it. Be careful!
Life is short, live it to it's fullest!
Re: A Southern winter storm
Stay safe. One of the reasons I am happy living where I do up north is that although I get 2' of snow sometimes, even 3 or 4' on rare occasions over a 2-3 day period, I don't very often get freezing rain that accumulates more then just a trace. I would much rather have 2' of snow then even 1/4" of freezing rain. I can ski in snow. All that I can do in freezing rain is fall down and break my face.
I'll take my -20 windchills tomorrow over the rain too.

Re: A Southern winter storm
They cancelled school and some people did not even go to work today here in Pensacola. Not sure why actually, it's 40 degrees right now here. The "bad" stuff is not even supposed to start until tonight. Kids think it's cool now there is no school the next two days. They'll be singing a different tune come Spring Break and it's cut short by two days to make up for it. I understand safety and all, I really do. Though I think people take it over board on stocking up on groceries like we are going to be in some blizzard and sub-zero temperatures for weeks at a time. I mean it's going to be in the 70's in three days here.
Re: A Southern winter storm
I'm at work though my secretary isn't happy about it. I'll likely shut down around noon. It's a great day to get caught up though I'm sure I won't have any customers come in. Already got some email so there are others working.
I don't think it'll be so bad and I never did. They always go overboard and I understand that. But, I feel for those who lose a day of work and don't get paid for it. Those are the ones who can least afford losing a day.
