It's King Cake time

Post by Beer-lord »

In my part of the world, it's King Cake time. If you want to know of the tradition of king cakes, google it.
Millions of dollars are made locally with king cakes thru Mardi Gras day and companies ship them all over the world. Its really simple but there are many, many styles made. Stuffed with fruit filling is popular now but the traditional cake is just a dough, usually flavored with anise but topped with a sugar coating that many then sprinkle purple, green and gold (mardi gras) color sugar on.
We make them simpler but they are still good. The wife just made a small one that I topped with bits of dark chocolate on top. It's best eaten warm but it's just plan goodness.

C'mon down ya'll <said with a thick, cajun accent>
No baby, we don't even bother. We really don't buy these and only make them sometimes. These puppies go for about $15 in the stores with fancy ones filled with you name it, going for $30.

Do you hide a goodie in the cake for folks to bust their tooth on?

That looks good, but dangerous. Dangerous in the sense that I could easily blow my weight-loss efforts with one of those in the house.

Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

No plastic babies were harmed in the making of this cake.
Mardi Gras actually starts in another week and MG day is March 4, late this year but better weather wise (we hope). I quit going to the parades as it's just not fun anymore to me but as for as showing boobs go, it's you 'foreigners' who do that. Us locals never did that and how that got started, I really don't know for sure but the last few years on Bourbon street, they've been arresting men for showing their parts too!
All for a plastic bead? C'mon, I'd only do that for a hoppy beer!
