2014 National Homebrew Competition Registration

Post by LouieMacGoo »

Below is an email that I received yesterday and wanted to pass along to anyone that is interested.

2014 National Homebrew Competition Registration Open January 27 – February 2
A number of changes have been made to the registration process for the 2014 National Homebrew Competition, with the goal of maximizing the number of American Homebrewers Association (AHA) members that can participate in the competition while reducing the stress of the first come, first served registration process of previous years. Read on to learn more about these changes.

Open Registration

Registration for this year’s AHA National Homebrew Competition (NHC) will be different than previous years. To avoid the time-sensitive nature of the first come, first served model of past years, the 2014 competition will have an open registration period from Monday, January 27 through Sunday, February 2, during which members of the American Homebrewers Association can register for the competition. The time at which registration is submitted will have no influence on registrants, so there is no need to sign up as soon as registration opens, nor any value to waiting until the last minute.

Note: Your AHA membership must be current to register, and you will need your member number.

If you don't have a current AHA membership but are interested in this competition. Please use the link below to join!

Join the AHA and support the BeerBorg at the same time!

Last year I got left out by the "charlie-fox" that was the NHC registration process.
This year, since I'm not an AHA member, I guess I'm left out by default.
So be it - I can understand their reasons for taking this approach. I would rather see them limit the number of brews each person can enter, to allow more people to enter (some brewers go berserk and enter more than a dozen beers)....but at least the process is clear up front: "become a member, or don't enter."

Actually they have limited the amount of entries each person can enter. 6 is the maximum per brewer. The Basic Brewing podcast has a good informational episode about the process and it really seems much improved over previous years.

I really encourage anyone that hasn't joined the AHA to do so. I just joined at the first of the year and I have already enjoyed the benefits of the magazine and discounts at my local brew pub!

Lou, is there a link to register with the AHA through the Borg? I thought there was and my membership is up this month and it's time to renew. So if there is a way to help the Borg out and renew let me know. Thanks in advance.

I imagine that somewhere along the line, I'll enter the National Competition. But I'll be tailoring my entry to the competition. Right now, I don't have anything that I consider competition-worthy, especially on that kind of level. But who knows what I'll come up with next year?

So, with all the talk of this and the email AHA sent and from folks here who seem to like my beer. Guess who threw his cat in the ring, yep this guy. Now the wait to see if I'm picked.

Come on Dave, you can do it. What's the worst, that can happen. The scariest part is clicking submit after filling out the form and it really didn't hurt (that much).

Quick update, got selected, send my payment, will send my beer to Rebel Brewer for the judging. It will be interesting to see how my Zoo House Saison is scored at the Suwannee Beer Fest and the Nationals.

Good luck to ya Jeff, I also just got in. Also sending my entry in to Rebel Brewer, I'm glad I don't have to compete against you though, my entry is for the "specialty Beer" category. I made a rye ipa so I hope I have enough rye flavor, I kegged it today and it did taste pretty good and the rye was there but you just never know.

That's great news Steve, all the best to your Rye IPA. It's only two beers and $14, so like you I figure what the heck. Our beers my go all the way. And I'm sure your beers would stack up against mine any day of the week.
