Flaked rye

Post by Beer-lord »

The few times I used flaked rye, I didn't mill it since it's malted but if doing a BIAB, is there really a problem with milling it? Though I'm pretty sure flaked rye will gum up my mill and don't want to try it but I am curious anyway.
Anyone just mill the flaked rye with the rye malt and noticed any difference?

What are you trying to gain by milling it? You'll have to consider risk vs benefit. I personally never milled, always kept separate from my grains.

I have read where some people do mill it even though it has no diastatic power but their reason was a smoother brew. I'm not seeing that milling would make that difference.
Certainly these guys were doing a BIAB brew because I'm pretty sure milling flaked anything would cause a stuck mash.

if is flaked I just mix it in with the crushed grains. I think the starches have been gelatinized for easy conversion.

I would think milling it would just make a gummy mess and not gain you much if anything...

FWIW, I have used flaked corn in a couple brews and the LHBS usually just tosses it in with my grain bill and crushes them all together, and have not observed any adverse effects. Although, the amounts have been pretty small in comparison to the rest of the grain bill, so maybe it depends on the ratio of flaked to regular grain.

I've used flaked corn and flaked wheat and like a few others here I just add them as is. nothing to be gained by milling, and possibility of gumming up the works. imo not worth it. then again, it's your beer.
