Hooking Up Regionally

Post by jimmypirate »

One feature I liked from the old borg was the regional forum where we could try to hook up with other brewers from our local areas. Any chance of something like that here Louie? :fillup

It is something that I am looking at, but there is a lot going on here right now and I wanted to let everyone and everything kind of settle in a little before I start adding all kinds of other group forums. It could get unruly pretty quick, (think HomeBrewTalk). I don't want to just slap things up on Borg without thinking about how it might impact the future. Bad planning can lead to a quick demise.

I promise we will get there but you will have to be patient with me!

In the mean time what would we call these groups? Hive User Groups (HUG), Borg User Groups (BUG), Collective User Groups (CUG)??? What are others suggestions?

Also what would be the best way to group them? By state, region, or area?

BeerBorg Sectors.
and it could be by state.
locating and visitation would be easier that way.

Just remember that the more you subdivide, the smaller the population that visits that section. You have to balance that against having a free for all in a section that's too big.
I have over 9,000 posts on "another forum", which means absolutely nothing. Mr. Beer January 2014 Brewer of the Month with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it...

RickBeer makes a good point: "Just remember that the more you subdivide, the smaller the population that visits that section."

For a group this size, one free-for-all board would probably be sufficient. It's not like there's thousands of posters all across the fruited plain here to keep a bunch of regionalized boards busy. One "users group" board with individual posts, the way the MB forum did it, would probably be just fine.

Another idea (in addition to the User Group idea, not instead of) would be to set up a BeerBorg version of the Google Map of forum members like the one someone had set up on the MB forum. Voluntary participation, of course. I would volunteer to set it up, but don't know how, and don't have a lot of spare time right now to figure it out. But, I think it could prove handy, especially when members travel ("hmm...let's see if any Borg members are near where I'm going to be traveling").
