Hop Juice

Post by BlackDuck »

Ok fellas, here's what I've got right now. I've thought about a lot of different ways to use hops for this recipe. But in the end, the processes are all what we've done before. Here's some background on some of my research and why/how I decided on certain ingredients:

The Grain Bill: I like my IPA's fairly straight up, which to me, means no crystal malts. But I do like them with some malt flavor though. So I've chosen Maris Otter along with the 2 row for the base. I also added a touch of Vienna to give it a little color. Both of these will add a little bit of malt bone to it, without it being caramel sweet.

The Hops: I thought about hop mashing this. I've read a number of arguments that it helped and a number of arguments that it didn't. One thing that I did read a number of times is that it seems to have a negative effect on the mash pH and can really wreak havoc on efficiencies. So I decided against it. It will utilize first wort hop though. It's got quite a decent bittering charge, so I decided to FWH some of it and do a traditional 60 minute boil too. I'm hoping the FWH will smooth it out a touch. I was also going to use some of the Hop Shot extract, but for some reason decided against it. I think mostly because my LHBS doesn't carry them. And I thought with the right hops and the right schedule, it really wasn't needed. I also decided to do some hop bursting to intensify the flavor and aroma, and of course some dry hopping. I chose mostly hops that were familiar to me for IPA's. But I did choose I new one, Apollo. I decided on this for the fact the description stated it was a great bittering hop and it contributed a strong grapefruit note if added late in the boil. And I liked that. My total IBU's is 158, which is actually under the Pliny clone that I did. But I wasn't trying to beat the IBU number in Pliny.

I think this should yield an Imperial IPA that is crisp and hoppy, and I think it fits the name well. So, here's the recipe, can't wait to here what you hop heads think:

Its on like Donkey-Kong! I can't get to this for a few weeks but I have most of what I need except for the MO and the Apollo hops. Since I have SO MANY HOPS I may just substitute something I have for the Apollo but I think Columbus is a substitute anyway.

Thanks for the leg work.I'm pleased that you took the IBU's to 157.6%. That's almost a double IPA and should be a good one.

Your very welcome. If you do sub out the Apollo for the Columbus, it will be interesting to see what the difference is, if any!!

With having done the RyePL yesterday and doing the RCE next Monday, I should be able to hit this one in another 2-3 weeks.

Oh, I am so all over this.
Thanks Chris for putting this together. My LHBS is closed on Mondays, so I'll Check tomorrow for the Apollo. That's the only thing I don't have at the house. Think I'll brew this up Saturday.

Glad you guys like the recipe. I will most likely get to this one in two weeks myself. I've got to get my Pale Ale done this weekend first. I just hope it tastes as good as the recipe looks. Or I will never hear the end of it from you guys. I'm not sure if my LHBS carries Apollo either, might have to order it online.

If it's not good I will track you down and watch the space aliens give you a hop suppository. (that even hurt me as I typed it)

I just searched and it seems that both Columbus and Magnum are substitutes for Apollo, I have both at home and only have 1/4 oz left over from a brew I did for the last RCE.

Hmmmm, saving this one. Looks very interesting, I've never used MO so this may be my chance. May have to jump in and brew this next, off to check my hop inventory. Thanks Chris

Hey Chris, not just because I'm lazy but when you get some time, would you mind emailing me the Beersmith file on this one? OK, it is just because I'm lazy but I'll make it worth your work.

Just got it loaded into BeerSmith, I'd post it here but BeerSmith is on another computer.
Any who, I get

OG 1.079
SRM 5
IBU 148

So that's pretty darn close. Hitting the LHBS tomorrow for the Apollo (I hope), but I have plenty of Columbus in the freezer if all else fails.

And I'm not lazy like Paul. :p

I can get high enough to make it to the cloud. I just went from cloud 8 to cloud 9 (Inkleg's cloud) and it wasn't there yet. Jeez, you'd think if you suggested it, you could have left a gift for me there.

Sure, no problem. I'll do it from work tomorrow.
Inkleg wrote:What about BeerSmith Cloud?
Maybe that would work too. I'll upload it on BeerSmith and share it. If I remember how to do that.

Either way, I'll get it done. Jeff, you want it emailed too?

"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."
