Brew Smith

Post by mtsoxfan »

I was going over a couple of recipes today, and thought something was wrong. Using Brew Smith, entering hops info, what they listed for alpha is different from hop packaging. Specifically, Northern Brewer. They list 7 and packaging lists 9.6. Has anyone run into this before?

I ony caught it because when redoing a recipe, the hop IBU seemed low. Since they don't list Galaxy, I went to Generic, which defaults to 10. I manually entered 15 as paackage states. I then decided, with all my free time, to double check other recipes...

I only use Brew Smith as a reference, my results are usually different from what I pull from them...

Yea..It's quite common for the numbers to be different than the software. In fact the alpha number can differ for the same hop from one year to the next. I always adjust my numbers in the software after I buy the hops to get the most accurate numbers I can.

Edit....Only once have the numbers been so far off that I actually had to adjust the amounts that I used.

+1 to Bd's post if you are using a design software always change the input to match the AA's that are on your package from what shows as a default in the database to be accurate .
This can also apply to some grains or UME's if the analysis sheet is available to you ( buying name Umes).
Some suppliers buy in bulk and personalize, resize/package DME/LME relabel so don't provide the data like a Bries data sheet might offer for brewers who are into details.

Thanks for the info. I know it is an entry level program, I get what I pay for, and that's all I need. I'l keep an eye open for hop values.
