Kealia's Quickie Pale Ale
Ron's note on this beer says it's one he found on the HBT forum of a batch that has no bitter hop addition but all late additions. I've not seen the recipe but I like to review without really knowing much about the beer.
It poured almost burnt orange, small head but it stayed throughout the beer. Maybe a bit over carbed for me but I think many beers are overcarbed so it's probably just me.
I don't get much aroma but I do get some mild citrus/orange aroma. There is a bit of a bite up front that I like and it surprises me. But, there is a spice type flavor that I can't quite tell what it is. It's not an off flavor, just one I don't know if it is part of the recipe and might be a slight extract twang.
The beer is so clear you can read a newspaper behind it! It's clean and light and at 5%ABV, low enough that you can drink lots of them. It's hard to believe it's a short run recipe and that there are no bittering hops. The hops don't stand out but the balance is there and that really surprised me.
The only slight I can give the beer is the up front, spice type flavor which again, is not bad, just not expected in a pale ale. And I wonder if more conditioning time will see it lessen.

I noticed that spice flavor as well in the beer, I thought it was intentional, and liked what it brought to the overall flavor.

I wasn't sure if it was planned or not and I wasn't saying it was an off flavor. I'm not sure any off flavor could taste as good as a spice flavor. No way would I have a problem with this beer. Only problem I had was it's all gone.

I'm back...with beer in hand. Paul's description is really good. Not a whole bunch of hop aroma, but it's a tasty beer. I see what your saying on the spiciness. But for me, it's not a bad thing at all. I like this beer. It's the kind of beer I like to drink when I'm looking for just a nice tasty beer to relax with. It's the kind I could enjoy a few of.
For a quick brewed pale, this is right on!!! Well done Ron!

The only thing I can think of is the Falconer's Flight dry hop adding that touch of spicy to it.
The entire recipe is just DME + some steeped crystal.
Cascade at 15 and then again at 5. Dry hopped with FF and fermented with US-05.
I get it too but couldn't put a finger on the description but I think spiciness is a good call out.
I'm not sure I like the FF hops too much, but I'll definitely brew this again when I have limited time and need a quick pipeline filler.
What this recipe did do for me is verify that the recipe/method will turn out a decent session ale.

I could see dry hopping with cascade, but why dry hop with a hop not in the profile? I mean dry hopping is only aroma right? or, and the more likely, have I got this whole dry hopping thing wrong?

You are correct, it's only for aroma. Since this was an experimental batch and process I figured I would use it to test these hops as well. It wasn't my original plan, but I decided to check them out when I saw them at my LHBS and since a few people here talk about them. I'm familiar enough with Cascade to know what it was going to taste like so I didn't mind throwing this variable into the mix.
So I have to guess that the spiciness is from that aroma, that is translating into a bit of taste. Or perhaps some of the Cascades that I had were starting to age a bit and added a little sumpin' sumpin;.

I'm curious if you guys would liken the "spiciness" you got as clove?
I got a hint of some (spiciness) on my version of an RCE collab and I eventually likened it to clove but there was no place in the recipe that I could see where that should have turned up re: yeast selection etc.

I wouldn't call it clove at all. I don't like a lot of clove and this isn't off putting at all. For me, the aroma was almost like a Belgian yeast had been used, but it didn't carry over to the taste.
(On a related note, I like my hefs heavy on the banana side and can't drink them if they are heavy clove)

I had a chance to enjoy mine last night. It poured a nice amber orange with a nice tan head that left some lacing on the glass. I got citrus on the nose, sweet tangerine if I had to narrow it down. A nice up front bite that dissipated as the malt came through. I said this tastes like my Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, so I went and poured a small glass of it. Damn these are the same beers, aroma, mouth feel and taste. The difference being that mine is All Grain and took 5 hours instead of the hour for Ron's. This will make me rethink this the next time I go to brew it.
Same beer at one fifth the time, oh heck yeah. On top of that I LOVE the label. Loved it so much it is now a permanent fixture in my brew room.

Jeff, that's awesome. I'm honored that I earned a spot in the brewery.
And it should taste a lot like Sierra Nevada....it's all Cascade except for the dry hop. I haven't had one in a while, but if it's that close that is pretty cool.
