About this time, every year, the State of CT publishes a frickin thick paper listing tens of thousands of names, all who have "lost" money now in controll of the state. Could be a nickle overpayment of taxes, or thousands of dollars in a deserted bank account. It's always nice seeing your own name in there... the waiting and wondering. Wife just picked up $50 some odd dollars this year. My only time was $.34... a ittle bit more than the stamp they needed to mail it to me...

Every state has these - the website is simply a link to each state. You can look up for each state you've ever lived in.

I actually found one for me for about $50. I am pretty anal about keeping up with accounts, financials, etc., so I'm stumped at what it could be. Hmm....

I found one for me, don't know the amount, but I'm just a little leery about giving my social and such to the website. I did see that it is encrypted, but still... just feeling uneasy.

Make sure you are on the official site for the respective state. They are 100% legit.

This website is run by the treasury department of the state of Tennessee (or your state of residence). Now, I can argue that there are a lot of scammish things about government, but this is a perfectly legitimate website based on an unclaimed property state law that all states have some form of (here is Tennessee's law [Title 66, Chapter 29, Part 1]). Banks and other business have a legal responsibility to report lost/abandoned funds/accounts/stocks/etc to the state government, which in turn puts it on this website.

I followed it to my state, nobody owes me a thang, just the way I like it. I did find some $$ for my wife, we knew about it years back and forgot about it. It's only $75, one of these days we will file for it. I've checked it out, it's real, atleast in Norf Dakoota.

The website is legit.

I found a missing payroll check from when I was subleasing an apt 10 years ago! I sorta remember thinking I was missing a check after I moved. And I didn't bother to forward my mail, because payroll was the only place that had that address, at the time all other mail went to my folks.

Thanks so much for submitting this.

For what it is worth, my state's website does not ask me to submit SSN online. I will have to submit documents by mail to the treasurer's office. Seems pretty legit to me.

Absolutely correct JP...you do NOT have to post your SSN online, it does not have a star by it. Print out the form(s) and fill out and mail it in to your State Revenue department...easy squeasy, lemon cheesy

Just to clarify for those that aren't comfortable on the INTERNETS...

Unclaimed.org is a website run by the National Association of Property Administrator affiliate with the National Association of State Treasurers. Click on your state takes you to the actual website run by your State Treasurer. Every state's site is different, and everyone's process is different. Some states may ask for info different than other states.

Missingmoney.com is NOT a website affiliated with either site. Missingmoney.com IS a website run by a company for the sole purpose of a) selling advertsing and b) collection your name, address, etc. when you key in that info. For some states they collect the info, others they send you to that state's site. I would NOT provide Missingmoney.com with any info. They say they don't store your name after the query (unless you register), but again I wouldn't trust them.
