Six Point Brewery - Hi Res IPA
The aroma on this thing hit me as soon as I opened it up. Full of citrus fruits from tangerine to pineapple. The color is a nice deep orange color with a little haziness to it. The head dissipated rather quickly but is leaving some real nice lacing.
This is quite a deceiving beer. It's kind of a disappointing 111 IBU and 11.1 ABV beer. The bitterness doesn't come across as 111, it leaves only a touch of that hop bite on the back of the tongue. I've actually had Pale Ales that had more bite than this. Here's the weird thing, the aroma that was so prevalent when I opened it up, seemed to disappear as it warmed. And unfortunately, it's replaced with quite a rubbing alcohol smell to it. It's not a terrible beer, but I'm not sold on it yet. I still have 3 more cans, so maybe it'll grow on me.
The guy at the store said this compared to Pliny, Heady Topper and Avery Maharaja. I've had Pliny and Maharaja and this one doesn't hold a candle to either one. I pass this up for either one of those two in a heart beat.

11.1? I would have never guessed. Great burnt orange color though. You think grapefruit/orange when you look at it.

I'll have to look for it. I do like their Resin IPA.

IBUs don't necessarily mean perceived bitterness. A better measure of that would be IBU/SG ratio. An 11.1% beer has a lot of malt sweetness to balance out. That probably accounts for a third or more of those IBUs. Then you have to figure that at least half of those IBUs were from flavoring rather than bittering additions. My Tasmanian Wheat is around 90 IBUs and has a very prominent bitter bite to it. But it's IBU/SG ratio is 1.858 a balance without much if any bitter bite at all would be around 1, a very smooth finish is around 0.75. Remember the more malt you have the more hops it takes to balance that sweetness out. The more hops you have the higher your IBU will be. But if the balance doesn't change neither will the finish.

It does look good, though. And the pineapple/tangerine aroma sounds great. Once again I will curse Google for not yet inventing the scratch and sniff internet.
Roger bring up good points. I believe Pliny is about 8% and not quite 100 IBUs so the bitterness is going to stand out more in that beer. OR maybe it's just a better beer
I really dislike it when I smell a beer and get that 'alcohol' aroma - it really puts me off. That alone may be the reason that I don't drink barleywines...
Hopefully the rest are better but I'm looking forward to the other reviews.

Don't get me wrong here....it was not a terrible beer. I think I may have just had some really high expectations for this based on what the guy in the store said about it. And it just didn't meet those expectations. Or maybe he's just a really good sales guy.
But I will say this....I woke up with one hell of a headache at 6:30 this morning. I've got 3 advil in me, it's 11:00 and I still have the headache!!!!

That's really interesting given all the Pliny that you drink. I wouldn't think that a single 11% beer would leave you with a headache. You DID only have one, right?
Maybe the alcohol smell was a sign of fusels which is causing the headache? Or maybe it's early and I'm just yammering.
