I bought weird hops
I ran out of hops. So I got some. Besides some Amarillo and Sorachi and Styrians and Santium, I went out on a limb and got me some:
Delta - super charged Fuggles with an American twist
El Dorado - super charged Goldings, with cherries and other fruits.
Wai-Ti - lemon, lime, and mandarin oranges.
Meridian - lemon, mixed berry, and tropical fruit
Apollo - citrus, grapefruit, orange, pine, resin, and cannabis
Now... what to make with them...

I live in El Dorado County CA, and a new brewpub in the neighboring town of El Dorado Hills uses El Dorado hops in its flagship IPA. It's fantastic.
Re: I bought weird hops
I've used Apollo a few times and don't really notice much different about them but its been in small amounts.
I've heard lots of good things about El Dorado. Never even heard of Wai-Ti.

Re: I bought weird hops
I just used Delta hops (with Bravo hops) in an Imperial Rye that have fermenting right now. I would bet the Delta and Apollo hops work pretty well together.

That sounds yummy. Aside from Apollo, I've never heard of the rest of them.Trollby wrote:Wonder if the Wai-ti would work good in a WitBeir

Re: I bought weird hops
I usually try to get an ounce or two of weird hops whenever I re-up on the standards. I actually just picked up 2 ounces of Meridian myself as they sound awesome. Not sure what I'll do with them yet though. Would love to get my hands on Wai-Ti and El Dorado. Wai-Ti definitely sounds like it would be good in an American Wheat.

Re: I bought weird hops
Wai Iti is the really weird one of the bunch - instead of high/super high AA like most of the new hops re, it's a low AA (3-4%) finishing hop from New Zealand.
I'm thinking of using some in a patersbier or blonde where I would normally use a low AA noble hop - to give it a lemon/lime/orange "twist". Or an American wheat beer. Or both. Or as dry hop in a pale ale. I think it sounds great for all those things.
It was the most spendy hop I've ever purchased , so it's not going to be an every day thing I use, unless it's just so freaking awesome I can't resist.

Sounds like it might be pretty good in a Berlinerweiss...mashani wrote:

I'm always eager to see your creations Mashani.

Hmmm... I might make one but it would be a sour mash version not a real sour bug version. Sort of like I did last year. Was "good enough".BigPapaG wrote:Sounds like it might be pretty good in a Berlinerweiss...mashani wrote:

Define "small amount".
