stretching the limit

Have a question about how to do a BIAB or have a technique that you want to share. Just brew it!

stretching the limit

Post by goblin »

my first 10 gallon batch.

with 10.5 gallon mash/boil pot
custom brew bag
two propane burners
about 19.5 lb grain bill

hope all the water and grains fit into the bop.

i have my pulley system setup, hope its not a PITA.
not sure on my sparging, will wait and see, i plan on having plenty of hot water standing by.
it has been awhile since i have had to worry about boil overs.
i am thinking about a 7 gallon starting volume.
then top off.

5 gallons will going on an amber yeast cake, the other will get 05 between two LBKs.

qbrew has OG 1.057 and final at 1.014

i would like to have a starting gravity of 1.065, but not sure if my setup can handle the extra 3 or so pounds of 2 row.

any :borg: feedback is welcome

thanks

Something tells me you're gonna need a bigger pot... :)

No, seriously - if you're planning on a 10 gallon BIAB batch, you will need at least a 15 gallon pot, and even then, it's tight. I've done a couple 10 gallon batches with my 62 qt rig, and it's tight. Heck, a 5-gallon batch with ~20 pounds of grain will be tight in a 10 gallon pot... What I would suggest is to do it as a partial mash, and make up the gravity with some DME, then top off to 10 gallons after the boil.
In Soviet Russia, beer brews you!
My brews
Fermenting:
Strawberry Rhubarb Wheat (5-gal)(AG)
Cranberry Mead
Buck-Flower Mead
Flanders Red (5-gal)(AG) x 2
On Tap:
Hefeweizen (5-gal)(AG)
Oaked Pear Cider

update:
i got all 19.5lbs of grain in with 6 gallons of water, probably could have add another 3 pound of two row.
after sparging ended up with just under 10 gallons, after 60min boil, 8 gallons.
ended up with 10.5 gallons.
fermentation is going great.

thanks, i will do two mashes in two pots, total will get close to the 15 gallon mark.

at least i will know my max with my bop.

time to grind some grains. :D

might make barley wine, scale to five gallons

makin something tomorrow.
