This is just wrong!

Post by Beer-lord »

Is it me just being old fashioned or is this just plain wrong? http://www.williamswarn.com/
Watch the whole video and tell me if you want one. First wrong thing is saying you can make beer in 7 days just like a brewery. Really, breweries make beer in 7 days? I don't think even Miller is made that fast.

Yea...I'm with you. I just don't see how 7 days is enough. Also...did you notice the first time he pulled the container off the bottom of the fermenter it was still foaming??? Even the overflow in the bowl almost doubled in size before he poured it all down the drain. Kind of looked like it was still an active fermentation to me.

Ummm. It STARTS at $7299.00? Cheese-and-rice! Do you have any idea how many five gallon buckets you can buy with that kind of money?
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Wow that is ridiculous. 8 days for a lager? No thanks, and also that process honestly looks like to many valves, knobs, and buttons to be worrying about for me. I am happy a mash tun, kettle, autosiphon, some fermenters, and bottles and a keg. That looks like it takes all the fun out of homebrewing. Ah yes Chuck beat me to it as well, the price is just a wee bit to much for me :o

So now's not the time to let you know that I purchased one for every member of the borg?
Seriously, how is this any fun?
I guess next I can just go to confession via twitter. Hey, that's an idea!

There was a lot going on with that system to basically make the same thing as a MB $10 fermenter. I think I will stick with my buckets.

It also looks like you are locked into their ingredients kits, although I am guessing there are forums around where they discuss using generic stuffs.

There are a lot of these gadgets coming out. This one is actually a little more reasonable and allows you to use regular ingredients and custom recipes:

http://www.picobrew.com/

People may say "but its cheating" but really this is how most of the micros and big guys do it. Once a brew is perfected on the pilot system, it needs to be made consistently and that is really all something like this is doing. As a home brewer, sure I do like a fairly consistent house brew or two, but the fun is in tweaking and coming up with new recipes imho. If it truly does work, it is a whole lot cheaper than an automated Bilchman tower system.

At least Picobrew gives you more control over your recipe using grains. But to me, that's still not fun. If I wanted good beer fast, I'd just go and buy it.
But, I can't complain that there are options for every type of homebrewer because that is a good thing.

The WW thing - it might not make good beer at a reasonable cost - but it would look cool in some of the kitchens folks have around here that are bigger then the footprint of my house. I'm sure some of them will buy one just because of that. And use it one or two times a year perhaps.

The pico-brew thing if I had endless amounts of cash I might get one so I could brew AG more often - yeah it's cheating sorta but I don't have time to brew AG all the time using other methods then set it and forget it. So lazy mode would work for me there. But it's kind of ugly - so it would not go into one of those kitchens mentioned above.

I am guessing that kind of money would buy you a 7 barrel system.

Except it would not look nice in your kitchen. They really are not targeting people like you and me, I really think the market they are targeting is the busy wealthy executive like my x-boss who lived in a 1.2 million dollar house that he got "cheap" for 800k when the market was bad. Who can then "brew beer" and impress all his friends with the cool looking device in his kitchen.
