Here are the basics.

A few times a year, the man in the hat (FedoraDave) organizes the RCE. He will start a thread that asks for participants and their experience level. He then tries to pair up an experience brewer with a less experienced brewer (presumably by pulling names out of the aforementioned hat). The pair then talk over phone, email, PM, whatever and craft a recipe of their own design. It can be extract, PM, AG, whatever. The purpose is to learn from each other, and get to know others on the Borg a bit better. I've been in a few of them and they were quite enjoyable (so were the resulting brews).

That's it in a nut shell. One is just finishing up, but I'm sure there will be another one around the corner. Look for a global sticky thread when the next one is announced.

Basically, 2 people are paired with one being slightly more advanced than the other and decide on what they'd like to brew. The 2 collaborate via phone, email whatever and then they both brew what they decided on, whenever they can and share the info on the brews.
Usually, the 2 exchange beers so that they can see how they compare (or not compare). It's a learning experience for both as well as a way to get to know another borg member better.

The beers don't have to be the same. In my RCE this time, I used a different yeast and a minor variation on the hops. We'll exchange beers and discuss how they compare. I love it and very much enjoy it.

Thanks for filling in the gaps, guys. To quote The Ol' Perfesser, Casey Stengel, ya done splendid.

The RCE was my brainstorm a couple of years ago, and it's proven to be pretty popular. I organize two of them a year, one in the late fall/early winter, and one shortly after Labor Day, when people have had their vacations and are ready to ramp up their brewing again.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of your experience level. You and your partner needn't even brew your beers at the same time, if you have different schedules. As noted, it's a way to try a style or a technique or an ingredient you haven't tried before, and, most important, a way to grow as a brewer and get to know another Borg member better. And you get beer!

So look for a sticky thread shortly after Labor Day for an announcement of the next RCE, and sign up! The Hat will take care of the rest.
