I have been assimilated to the dark side!!! :(

Although, I still cool the wort with an ice bath, and using the BIAB bag instead of a traditional filter. Doing some kinda hybrid SMEIBB/Traditional thing here!

Whose jealous? I've seen the photo of all the gear you use to brew with, I bet you have to store all that stuff in a whole separate house, and I still can't figure out how you get to your pots without tripping over all that tubing.

I just went with a simple braid filter.

It works great and I've never gotten a stuck mash using it.

I'm gonna wait and see if I get a false bottom for Christmas. If not, I'll end up making my way to Lowes and picking up the braided hose and some copper wire like that to make a bazooka tube.

Thank you, it's great to be back. Although I had to put brewing on hold for months, I'm finally going to get back in action again soon.

philm00x wrote:Sooooo I finally finished rigging up the spigot, but haven't configured a filter of any kind yet. Would a filter be necessary, or can you just recirculate the wort over the grain bed, using the grains as a natural filter, until the wort runs clear? If anything, I can just use my BIAB bag to hold the grain and filter the solids until I can get a bazooka screen or something.
Phil, you will need a manifold, false bottom, or braid to filter the runnings, and I see further down in the thread that you intended to put together a bazooka braid such as Vince has done. This will work fine, but keep the following in mind:

Small particles will still make their way through, so be prepared to vorlauf, i.e. recirculate the first of the runnings http://www.homebrewtalk.com/wiki/index.php/Vorlauf

I do this with my first runnings, and the sparges, too. You can really see a difference as it's draining, and I think it makes a difference in the clarity of the finished beer.

Oh man... thread resurrected. I've since received a false bottom as a christmas gift from last year so everything's all good. I do vorlauf and that has been the key to my efficiency batch after batch. Thanks though, Dave!
