You'd think I'd have figured this out by now

Post by FedoraDave »

I mentioned to SWMBO how I brewed the last of my Mr. Beer recipes today, and how quick the whole process went.

She mentioned that I should have that option all the time. Meaning that I should have ingredients on hand for a quick brew just in case I can't get to the LHBS. And she's right.

I just take it for granted that I'm going shopping just about every week or every two weeks. But it isn't always possible, or else, I feel pressured to go because if I don't, it'll interrupt my brew schedule. This is especially important since I work every other Saturday, and every time there's a fifth Saturday in a month. It wears a guy out.

So next week, I'm not working Saturday. I'm planning a five-gallon batch, and the following 2.5 gallon batch. But I should also buy enough DME or LME and maybe a pound or two of specialty grain to keep in stock in case I get caught short some weekend. At the very least, I can brew up some light malt extract, throw whatever surplus hops I've got around (and it's a good selection), and I already keep some dry yeast in reserve, so there you go. Emergency beer kit.

That's how I do it Dave. I've got a stock of assorted grains and hops, packs of dry yeast, some DME and LME. I could brew some form of many styles at any time. And I do keep the extract for a quick batch. In fact, I find myself with too many ingredients, hoarding if you will. That's why I brewed the Irish Red as extract, I had three full cans to use. I'm tempted to buy more hops, though I have ten varieties on hand.

Never mind, there it is.

I'm lucky enough to have 3 LHBS within a short drive, but one is on my way home from work and has longer hours than the others, although its stock can be spotty. So I keep basic DMEs and a variety of specialty grains and hops in my own supply, to simplify planning my upcoming brews. I don't buy grains just because I'm low, but I buy extra when I need something. I keep a plan for the next month or 2 for what I'll be brewing, keep an eye on what I'll need, and a week or so before a brew day I make sure I have what the recipe needs. I could throw something together from what's in stock, but usually am more specific in preparation to see if I need to visit one of the other LHBS when they're open.

That struck me as seriously funny because it seems completely out of character for you Dave.
Well played.
