Hi

I just moved into a new rental home. it looks like they have single hung, dual pane windows. there is a tag with an ansi serial number on it that when I google it a company called Atrium comes up.

That side of the house (bedroom is there and I work nights ) gets buttloads of sun. the room is hot even with black out curtains. I put up Gila window film but when it started baking and the glass was getting SUPER hot I read the instructions which said 'do not apply to dual pane windows unless you put it outside the window'...seriously??? so off it came...wasted money, yay!

I've used aluminum foil on windows before to block heat and light but they were single pane. Now please... this is for those in the know, not for speculation. can I safely use foil on dual pane windows to reflect the heat and light out without blowing any gasket in the window? If not, would a sheet of white rigid foam insulation shoved in the window bay work safely? I seriously need to block the sun. it's like Seinfeld's Kenny Rodgers chicken episode but with 90 degree heat!

You can add a storm window to the outside, or an awning, but since it is a rental, that doesn't seem practical. Any barrier on the outside would be more effective, but on the inside, use the foam.

my mom used these things when i was a kid..... they are called solar curtains kinda look like tin foil but different material im thinking they worked cuz she kept using them

Purchasing solar shades should work. They are designed to cut the sun, you can buy ones that let in 3% only, or 5%, 7%...
