Ramon Vacas Roxo!!!

Arbor Day was founded in the small Spanish village of Villanueva de la Sierra. Convinced of the many benefits of trees, an enthusiastic priest, Ramon Vacas Roxo, decided to plant a tree and give a festival for celebration. In 1805 he planted a Poplar (pictured right), and followed it with 3 days of partying.

America followed suit years later in 1872, and countries around the world started falling in line as well. Now we celebrate on the last Friday of April by planting a tree!

Although, I could probably get by without the enormous oak in my side yard that deems it appropriate to drop a metric ton of acorns in my yard every fall.

I like trees and always loved the forest but I am running out of room. got 4 mimosas (planted 2 more last year) as well as bushes around the front yard and 1 60 year old live oak in the backyard(the acorns are smaller) in a real small yard. oh yeah and honeysuckle and morning glories on my fences

Lots of trees in Forest City. I am a fan. Where I used to live some miles down the road the city had a dedicated arbor department, and went out of their way to preserve and protect big old trees by building the sidewalks around them (think curvy) and helping folks maintain them instead of chopping them down to make room for a straight line. Had a huge 100+ year old oak tree in my front yard there.

Only down side is once in a while one of those huge trees takes out a house in a big wind. But around here on my side out town we don't stress about that. Would rather have the trees.

Love me some trees! I need to plant something in my front yard soon. Maybe a nice maple tree. What better time than the last Friday in April, followed by a three day party???

I have two HUGE oak trees in my backyard (and my neighbors have HUGE walnut trees), so I get an abundance of nuts in my yard (no comments, sickos! ). But I also have a lot of squirrels that make quick work of the nuts, so they're usually not a problem. Sometimes I have to rake up walnuts into a pile before I mow, if there are a lot of them.

Great bit T8r! I also have prolific white oaks in my (actually neighbors) yard. But think of this: the lifespan of a White Oak is 600-800 years. Some live to a thousand. Those acorns aren't a nuisance, they're a legacy. Thanks Father Ramon.

Hey Evily, have a TREE Wedding and then we can party for the lovely wedded couple for THREE Whole days!!!

I have a next door neighbor that when he moved in he proceeded to cut down 3-5 evergreen trees that were only 20-25 years old yet were 30 plus feet tall. Now being a little selfish, they were great shade trees on the west side of our home which is the hottest side in the summer. Still, I would never think of taking the life of dem trees. I have grieved to this day yet my neighbor and I are back on speaking terms finally!!!

I LOVE trees, they give us life and a sense of being in the mountains on a windy day.

I'm also a hugh fan of trees. (Isn't that like saying I'm a hugh fan of Mom and apple pie ? )

I'm in the same boat as the Hat. I had 5 gigantic oaks in my yard. We took one down 20 years ago because it was right next to the house. Every fall I do nothing but pick up leaves and acorns. Did I mention the tree pollen in the spring?

Last year a bolt of lightning hit the massive oak in our front yard. My wife and I were both home at the time. It made a sound like a canon going off. There was a spiral where the the bolt traveled from 20 feet up the tree to the to the ground. We had to get the tree taken down. It was hollow! I could sit inside this tree and play guitar if I was so inclined… that's how big it was. I have a picture of my wife standing on one side of a 5 ft length of the trunk and peering to the other side. It looks like a tunnel.

So now we have 3 hugh oak trees. That's enough for me!

But I still love Mom, apple pies and trees.
