So I knew it would be pushing the 10 gallon MLT to the absolute limit today with 25 pounds of grain and 9 gallons of mash water. Honestly, it nearly fit with no run over at all. But, in the end.....A little did manage to creep over the sides. It was pretty nervous coming down to the last few pounds of grain that's for sure. I honestly think I did not lose too much in the end. Biggest grain bill I have so I know I am save for all the other brews moving forward on the pilot system.
Yeah, nearly fit in the MLT

Wow. That's really riding the ragged edge of disaster. You should be good, though. I can't see myself handling that big a grain bill, but it's nice to know I could if I wanted to.
Also, good idea on the thermometer on the side. I may have to consider that for my MLT, which happens to also be a repurposed Home Dopey water jug. How is the installation handled, if you don't mind schooling The Hat on this technique?

It was the ragged edge, Dave. I can tell you that for sure. It worked (apparently) out "ok" in the end. Like I said, not too much slipped out over the top really.FedoraDave wrote:Wow. Of course, no problem at all. I got the thermometer from Williams Brewing and all it took was to drill a 7/16th inch hole into the cooler at a depth of the size batches you usually mash. Then slip it through the hole, use the nut that has a handy-dandy o-ring slot cut into it. Tighten it down and you are good to go. Great little addition to a MLT or HLT as well.
Here is the link for the same ones I have in mine.

Ah, thanks for the link.
I didn't realize it was a specific type of thermometer with a threaded part and a nut. I thought you'd taken a standard meat probe thermometer, drilled a hole, installed the right sized rubber gasket, and then just slid the stem through.
Kind of spendy, but I think definitely worth it.
