Now as to the yeast stick, in short :p ) one must understand that while creating "beer" was occurring terms like beer, yeast, fermentation or alcohol, as relates to the beverage of the particular time period did not exist as we know it. As American Indians learned to place a dead fish next to their corn and squash plants in order for them to thrive the ancients ( believed to have originated with the ancient Sumerians ala women being in charge of the brewing.... the yeast stick was quite simply a stick used to stir things, in this case what will end up as beer. The grooves will have collected trub (they didn't know any better at the time) and the yeast on the stick "went dormant" (they didn't know any better at the time) until the next "brew day".

Oh and I would be remiss if I failed to mention that the resulting concoction invariably tasted quite foul and was only imbibed for ceremonial occasions like preparing to go off on burning and pillaging raids, ominous omens and the like.

I can give a big long dialogue on the history of beer and how women were the brewers for most of its early evolution if you like. :jumpy: :jumpy: :jumpy:

At the risk of getting hit with the yeast stick, I just want to go on record and say, I know some women who do a great job of stirring things up.

You should start a blog with a "Women in Brewing" section.

it's amazing how an innocent conversation can get turned into a degenerate escapade. Gotta love it here.

Hey Dawg, agreed and don't feel like it was me by intention.

I was just offering an historical and symbolical idea when some of the verbiage attracted attention and went awry in an attempt at humor.

I was simply into history and symbolism for a beer related wedding and still am.

Yeast Sticks, casks and bungs real are and I intended in my posts for the idea to be true to brewing history.

Hope I was not the one offensive.

No apology necessary, I think. The Bride to be has expressed her amusement. I found it pretty funny too. And while I loved the "worthless without pictures", I really think some things are best left to the imagination. Who really wants to watch yeast doing the dirty work?

All Y'all done went and misinterpeded my posts intent. After 20 years in the military, and being over 61, I doubt y'all could even find something that would cause me to say shame on you...unless you spilt beer or something scoundrelous like that.
I truley love the humor of this place, as it steps on the line, but really never crosses it. (as if I'd really care).
My intent was to inject just a wee bit of humor. Apparently, I boloed that. So I shall take my zero and sit down.
Love you all long time.

I, for one, love a good degenerate escapade!

This has been an enlightening, educational and amusing thread. Thank you, BrewBirds, for the history lesson! It is unfortunate (or maybe fortunate, depending on how you look at it) that some of us have our minds planted firmly in the gutter. If I had to pay a nickel for every time I said "That's what she said" in response to something my fiance said, he would be rich. :p And that's why he's marrying me. Probably we should avoid any mention of yeast sticks during our wedding ceremony, or I'm likely to crack up laughing. Or else, when the reverend says "You may now seal the bung", I might give the honorable reverend a nudge and a wink and say "That's what she said!"

Evily, you could certainly print this thread out and read it on your honeymoon! That'll make for a memorable experience!

I don't know Beer_Lord I think she should print it out and stash away as a reminder of what he got into WAAYYY after the honeymoon. ;)

For example as I type this I have a blow dryer pointing into my freezer trying to unclog the little drain valve doohickey at the bottom; do I have a single clue what I'm doing - heck no - but it is my solution to the current crisis/chaos; the other day I flooded the pantry because I forgot to turn off the the water supply to my leaky sink; those are the types of things that defines my ( DOH OUR) life.

UUUHHH I wonder if I should have waited until after they got married to post this.
