Brewing "Goose Stool " brown ale

I am using up my leftover grains and hops. I had most of what i needed for a Moose Drool brown ale. I subbed out Willamette for Liberty. It was a 60 minute addition so hopefully it won't matter.
I didn't have C60 and I used C 40.
I screwed up a couple of the hop additions and had to average out what seemed would work on the fly. It still looks like it will a brown beer of some kind.

Beersmith threw me a curve when getting the pre-boil gravity. I had never used the program for a partial mash and when i took my post mash sample it was very low compared to the estimate pre-boil gravity. I added dme to compensate and then went ahead with the boil. Step one of the boil was to add the the dme originally called for in partial mash recipe. I had just added an extra 1.5 #s of DME to bring up the SG. I think that Beersmith was assuming the SG had the boil extract added already for the SG.
After all was said and done I raised the FG from 4.7 to 6.2 by adding the extra extract.

I think it should still ok. I'll have to wait 6-7 weeks to find out.

Don't sweat the substitutions. I do it all the time, particularly with bittering hops. I also use different crystals or dark malts for what I have on hand.

Never mind, there it is.

Thanks John.
I'm starting to learn that I don't have to follow recipes slavishly. i'm developing a sense for what various ingredients add to a beer and how they can be altered or tweaked. I've learned a lot over the last year from reading and following the brewers on this borg. Ray Daniels book" Designing Great Bears " has been a big help. It's nice to learn something new.

Only thing I would change is I would hold out another 5 or 10 minutes before adding the whirfloc. 15 minutes is too long to boil that stuff. 5 or 10 is better if you want it to be effective.

No expert on recipes, but I noted that the quantity of hops for this 5 gallon recipe is quite a bit different than the Caribou Slobber recipe at Northern or the Moosedrool Clone recipe at AHB. For 5 gallon recipes, first one uses 1 oz of US Goldings (60), 1 oz Liberty (45), and 1 oz Willamette (15). AHB's recipe uses 1 oz EKG (60), 1 oz Liberty (15 and at flameout) and 1/2 oz Willamette (5). For what it's worth, I use EKG for 60, Liberty for 25, and Willamette for 15 - all 1 oz for 5 gallons. We love it. Hope you enjoy yours!

Thanks for checking out my recipe. I am making a 2.5 gallon batch. I remember reading that you really like Moose Drool.

I put the Northern Brewer recipe into Beersmith and scaled it down and subbed out a few ingredients.

This is the second try at a Moose Drool clone and I've not gotten it right yet. I hope what I made is a least a decent beer.

Typo, I meant for your 2.5 gallon batch. Less than half the hops.

I make it from extract.

Yes, the hops are all off. I don't know what I was thinking. I have to double check these recipes before I fire up the stove!
That's why I called it Goose Stool instead off Moose Drool.
Who knows what this will be like. It is high in the ABV. The color is a little too light and the hops are wrong. Oh well. I think it still barely falls into the American Brown Ale class.
This is why I only brew 2.5 gallons.
