This is a 7.5% rye IPA. Has a good bit of rye, and some 45L crystal and biscuit malt. 90 IBUs, and Columbus and Simcoe hops are what I taste.
I's piney/resiny/earthy/spicy/bready, with some zest like citrus flavors. It has a medium body with a touch of crystal sweetness up front that tempers the initial "bite" and it finishes dry and has spicy bitter lingering finish - but it's not overpowering and I like it. If you like bitter marmalade on rye toast, you would like it too.
Even at 90 IBUs I find it to be very well balanced. I am not so much a fan of Sierra Ruthless Rye although I know lots of folks like it - I personally find it to be "harsh" for a lack of a better word, and it's hard for me to describe why besides that term. This beer is not "harsh", it's very well balanced to my tastes.
I don't buy a lot of 7.5% beer, but this is one I'd pick up regularly. I think it's the best Rye IPA I've had. Biscuit malt is certainly going into my next rye IPA, it works great here.
Too bad it's seasonal.

I love a little biscuit malt and always keep some around. Never paired it with rye though and now I have it on my radar.

I picked up a 6 pack of this over the weekend. I completely agree with your comments mashani. The rye "bite" is definitely there, but it is well balanced with the hops and sweetness of the other malts. I like this too and would drink it all year if I could.

Also agreed... I have had this one a bunch... Very nice!
In fact, I really enjoy almost everything they brew over at Great Lakes...
Their Edmund Fitzgerald is my 'go to' for a quick Porter fix...

I guess I'll see if I can find this when I look for the ESBs from the other thread as I love a ryePA.

I don't know if Great Lakes ships to TX.. but if they do, I would recommend you try anything they make.Brewbirds wrote:I guess I'll see if I can find this when I look for the ESBs from the other thread as I love a ryePA.
