Leftover Pale Ale

Post by John Sand »

I brewed an extract batch today, using partial cans of LME and garden hops. It broke some rules. One of the open cans of LME was a 2/1 mix of Munich and Pilsen Light that has been in the fridge seven months. The other was an open can of amber that was only opened three months ago. I didn't put vodka on either, trusting the fridge to do the job. They looked and smelled okay, the wort smelled great. I used leaf hops from an upstate garden. Three generations old, they are probably cluster. Here it is:
1.8lbs Amber LME
1.1 lbs mixed Munich Pilsen 2/1
.75oz Cluster @ 25
.75oz Cluster @ 5
1/2 pack S-04
It's in my BDC right now. OG 1.048, 2.125 gallons, 38IBU.
I'm thinking of calling it "Old Pale Ale", or "Old Garden".

Never mind, there it is.

IMO you got the name right on the thread "Leftover" seems perfect. would seem to indicate a beer, while not bad, is not exactly repeatable.
"Filled with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chambers of my brain
-- Quaintest thoughts -- Queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
Who cares how time advances?
I am drinking ale today."

Sounds like one of the original lagers that Anchor used to brew way back when.

Good luck with it!

Thank you both. I've sort of been hoarding ingredients. So I wanted to brew and use them up.

Some of the best beer I've made has been Frankenbier.

It should be tasty whatever it is.

Yeah, looks good...

BTW, I have used old open cans of refrigerated LME as well...

No mold, no issue... Just a little darker...

Glad to hear it Papa. Thanks Mash. I guess if it works out well, I'll have to modify the recipe instructions: "Open two cans of LME, use half to two thirds. Lager the rest at 35 for six months...
