Speidel Plastic Fermenter - Anyone?

Post by ScrewyBrewer »

I've been looking at several plastic fermenters lately for my new brewroom setup and came across the Speidel HDPE fermentation tank. It sounds really good because it's food grade has a spigot and a large screw on cap for easier cleaning. Oh and on Amazon it's only $55.00 for the 15.9 gallon size.

Has anyone used one of these as a fermentor before, if so what do you think of them?

I just got a 3.2 yesterday and think it is great. It has very heavy plastic and the spigot is well made.
From what I can tell from my one day of ownership it will be great.
The small size that I have doesn't have a lid with hole to accept an airlock. So far I like it a lot.

I bought the 30L on last year...http://morebeer.com/products/speidel-pl ... 7Aod0G8AkA
I love it. I've used it about 10 times and now that I have my SS fermenter, I'll likely use it less but it's great. Easy to clean and move.
The only down side I see is the spigot is way to low to use to bottle from. The trub is always higher than the spigot so I just use the auto siphon like I do in a bucket.
The airlock is strangely large and I've never even gotten close to a blow out but you can fit a regular carboy bung in the top to use a tube if you want. These things take a beating too.

Thanks folks, I'm going to get this one. I thought it was a good option and appreciate your feedback as always. I figure while it's empty it'll also be a good place to mix up my water profile ingredients a day or so ahead of time too.

Beer Lord, what size batches you put in that 6 gal. ?

Yes, I actually did one at 6 1/2 gallons. Since it holds nearly 8 gallons, I was no way near needing a blow off. It'll likely last longer than I will.

I'm thinking the 20 gallon RIMS system I'm getting will produce between 12-14 gallons of wort per batch, which should fit perfectly in the 15.9 gallon Speidel fermentor.

That's a pretty sweet setup Screwy! Are you buying that pre-built, or DIYing it?
Fermenting: Bucket 1 - Fresh Squeezed IPA; Bucket 2 - Empty

Kegged: Keg 1 - Irish Red; Keg 2 - Cream Ale; Keg 3 - Amber Ale; Keg 4 - APA; Keg 5 - Empty; Keg 6 - Empty; Keg 7 - Empty

I plan to buy rather than attempt the build, High Gravity has the system I like so far. Since I started visiting their site about 6 months ago they've added a 144 quart system and a dual controller too, but that's a little too pricey for me.

Vince, I love that you are stepping up your game but I am green with envy.
I hope you continue to post pictures of your build as it progresses.

I really need to find me some type of tiered stand as I'm getting tired of lugging heavy pots and fermenters around. My house is just not set up well for this so I'm in rigging mode, likely forever. I've seen their videos and though I've not really matched prices with other companies (because I can't afford any of them) High Gravity does appear to be very reasonable.

Screwy, you might want to look at the new systems that blichmann just released, although it's kind of pricey. I'm considering getting one in the future, or the morebeer conical with temp contol. I almost bought a speidel fermenter, but like the better bottles with the racking adapter because you move the spigot around. I just wish BB made slightly larger carboys.
