Little Self Promoting I guess

Post by Funky Skunk Brewing »

So over the weekend I receive an email from a member of the league office of the Ontario Hockey Association. I used to play for a team waaaaay back in the day named the St. Catherine Stallions of the now (and for a while) defunct Eastern Canada Hockey Association back in 1996-97. Any who, I was told that my name and number would be among the first jersey numbers retired for the Stallions paying tribute to former members who apparently helped form a better league and teams moving forward back then.

A dubious honor I suppose and one that I thought was pretty cool. They sent over a mock-up of what the banners will look like, so I wanted to share that with the Borg. Nothing huge or going into the Hockey Hall of Fame or anything, still it was a great time of my life and I have a life time of great memories and friends from that period in my life.

So here is the banner mock-ups:

Hey thanks, guys. Yeah, it was pretty cool to receive that email and they are even talking about having us up when/if they do any formal ceremony during next season's games. Obviously we'd be on our own to get there, though they said they would pay for the hotel room and a nice dinner the night of the ceremony.

I was never that great, though teams did pay me to play so I always make light of my "career" but in my mind, I was very proud that a kid from Florida could get paid to play hockey for a little while. My buddies all the time make fun of me and my minor league career, though I know it's tongue in cheek, as they are the ones to always remind me that not everyone was paid to play a game. And that always makes me feel pretty good.

It was funny to see programs and see all of the Canadians, Russians, Euros and Northern players names .... Then Florida next to my name. Always got a little laugh out of that.

Hey, Eddie, there's nothing wrong with a little self-promotion, especially something as cool as having your number retired.

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing!
