Re-Shape Chiller?

Post by John Sand »

I brewed on Tuesday, as ever with some challenges. One was that my wort chiller had to be forced into the pot of boiling wort. I made the chiller for a previous, wider pot. I think I measured it for this one, but didn't count on the lip partway down. Anyway, it was fun putting the pot on the floor, and prying the chiller in with a spoon. Now I need to reshape it. (The chiller, not the pot) It is a double coil, inner and outer. A single coil would be easier, I'd just wrap it around something. I am considering trying to reshape it inside a cylinder. What say you? Has anyone here reformed a chiller? (CHILLLERRRR :o )

The only thing I have done with mine is change the height (spread out the coils or push them tighter) from my last pot to my new one. Copper kinks pretty easy, so I would be concerned about that when "re-shaping". If you have a tube bender it might be easier to do without kinking.

As copper comes coiled I really do not see much of a problem if you are careful and arent trying to unbend any funky bends.

Update: I simply put it on top of a plate with the proper diameter, then tightened the coils by eye. Used today, worked fine.
