I believe the modern day NFL started with the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1970. I would even go back a few more years to the first Super Bowl in 1967 between the two leagues. Otherwise it's kind of like saying the ancient Greeks are a great Olympic team...

Pretty sure it was based on a US Steel or Steel and Iron Workers logo.
