Tomorrow's gonna be a good day

Post by Gizmo »

I'm currently a night shift worker, and this is my off weekend. I'm a strange person, who would rather keep my body on schedule than try to be "normal" on my off sets (like most of the rest of the guys I work with). So I stay up all night by myself while my family sleeps. Boring, but it's good time for me to get things done without the honey-do list or little ones begging for attention. Someone else put smoking meat into my head in another thread, and since I'm not going to wake up early enough to smoke some ribs for dinner, I've decided to do pulled pork tonight, then just reheat it tomorrow. Here's what she's looking like 8 hours in:

I've also whipped up some sauce and some homemade cole slaw to go with it. Not only that, but I'm also going to take my 4 year old to see Despicable Me 2 tomorrow night as well, so good daddy daughter time during a stretch where she sees me less than when I work daytime shift.

Finally, because I don't feel like finding somewhere else to post it, here's the first pour of my raspberry wheat that I just cracked open:

They're both looking mighty good, 'Mo!

And applause for the daddy/daughter movie date. It's tough to be a parent when you work odd shifts. The fact that you're taking the time to do something special with your little girl is something she'll remember and appreciate all her life. I tip my Hat to you, sir.

Gizmo, I really identify with your post. I'm a "graveyard" worker!
I've been a second or third shifter for almost 23 years now. Some in my family STILL don't understand why I sleep part of the day away! ;) When I was younger, I would stay up all day on Saturday and rest up on Sunday. Not now. In fact I didn't get off until 2:30 this morning! We get to go in early on Saturday! :laugh My regular schedule is 9:30 pm-6 am.
I do a lot of my brewing and bottling at night. Can't do the cleanup though. The big bathroom is upstairs and SWMBO would not be happy with that racket!
I do a lot of research, reading and music playing with my free time, i.e. middle of the night!
I can't lie, I really miss being on the same schedule as everyone else though.

Your meal looks succulent and your plans to spend time with your daughter are even better. Also, your brew looks fantabulous!
Enjoy!

Have to agree. The meat and the beer both look delicious. I also know about night shift. I spent over half of the past 40 years working nights. That contributed to 2 divorces, but there were other reasons also. Now I have a wonderful wife who has stood by me all those lonely nights, and finally, at 58 years old, I moved to working days so we could be together more. Hang in there, and love your family for all you're worth, which it sounds like you already do. :clink:

Man we were at the store yesterday and debated picking up a pork shoulder they had on sale for 1.05 per lb. That raspberry wheat looks delicious!

One of my grocery chains advertised whole boneless shoulders for $1 a pound a while back so I went to the store nearest my house and grabbed six.

When I got home I trimmed them up a bit and cut each one in half so I ended up with 12 roasts at about 3lbs each which is perfect for the two of us.

We will eat on one of those for quite a few days. I'll rotisserie or oven roast one and then take a few slices for sandwiches and use the rest in a big pot of green chili stew that we'll eat on for a while since it will also freeze well.

I love having a big freezer but wish I had a smoker. That is a fine and mouth watering pic there. I have a Carolina BBQ sauce for pulled pork that I use but I'd love to be able to smoke some meat once in a while.

I'm using a little Ducane gas grill that was my Mom's right now and it is a finicky little thing.

We like to make the pork shoulder Cuban style, marinated in mojo, with a bunch of garlic cloves pushed into slits inside it, and crisped up on the outside. The kind of pork meat used for Cuban sandwiches. mmmmm

OOOH I remember those from our St. Petersburg days, wonder if we could get our old house back?

If Alb would join the Borg she'd want a food/recipe section. Here's hoping she comes back for another visit. (was it something we said?)
