Craft Beer Brats?

Post by Beer-lord »

Never knew there was a craft beer sausage. Seems our local Sam's is pushing it as I got about 5 emails today alone pushing this.
The Third Shift logo could be a deal killer though. :p

Interesting. I wonder how those taste.

Brats are the only reason I buy cheap beer. I simmer the brats in beer and onions before they go on the grill to brown up. The beer does add some flavor, but I'm not so sure it's worth the price of using a good craft beer to do it. Although, now that I think about it, using a "lite" style beer as opposed to an amber or brown may change the flavor slightly. Maybe not on the brats so much, but I bet you would notice it in the onions. And the onions are the best part!!!

Third Shift is craft beer since when? Didn't know Miller was allowed to be considered a craft brewery.

I'll get some normal brats and cook them myself, if I want to make them craft beer I'll throw some Stone IRS or Old Rasputin on it.

The only beer that touches brats in my house is PBR. And leftovers are not bad on a hot summer day. And it's almost cheaper than bottled water.

BeerLord: Just got this email and you beat me to the punch...oh well. Agree that Third Shit broke the deal. I didn't like the one brew I drank of theirs soooooooo. Also agree with Russki about PBR before I started brewing. Nowadays when I am parboiling my snausages I try to use a rather hopped beer to do so.

Though I'm not a huge Abita fan, their Turbo Dog is great for boiling the brats.

I think it's absolutely disgraceful that you would talk about children in such an insulting way! They're not brats, they're individuals! And to say that you're going to boil them? Inexcusable! This is nothing less than child abuse, and you should be ashamed of yourself! Not to mention the fact that you're advocating giving alcohol to children! I am appalled! I am disgusted! I am ...

I've actually had them before. They were on sale at our local Meijer for $1.99 a 5 pack. They were decent as were the other American Craft Brat flavors.

But I have to say one of the best beer brats I had were made with the nastiest beer. I was on my way to a friends house when he called and told me to pick up $20 worth of the cheapest 40s of beer they had at the party store. They had King Cobra on sale so I bought how many ever went into $20. It was a lot. They had a a big bonfire going and we put a cast iron pot in the middle of the fire and filled it with King Cobra and put a lot of brats on it. After they boiled for a while you just picked one out with a skewer and then roasted it for a bit in the fire. After a while they pulled the pot off but we pulled brats out and put them on the fire for breakfast.

Hmmmm... may have to try my own brown ale on some brats. I've never had Third Shift, but it sure does make for some good marketing strategy.

Nothing to write home about, IMO.

It's just miller trying to tap into the craft beer sector.

I just brought back some fresh Usinger brats from WI. I plan on grilling them as is, and drinking my OWN "Craft Beer"!

I've found that brown ale adds a very interesting flavor to my brats. But when I boil brats in beer I open the beer the day before and pour it into a bowl to sit out over night. I've found that flat beer boils better than fresh beer and it doesn't seem to take anything away from the flavor of the brats. Also, I simmer the brats very, very slowly and then grill fast and hot.

And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.
