Empire State Open

Post by BigPapaG »

Got my results back yesterday for this competition...

Entered three beers but did not medal. Meh... That's ok.

I did get an Honorable Mention though for my IPL!

IPL (Honorable Mention)

Scored: 36, 34, and 38 for an Average Total of 36

Comments: Awesome Hop Character... I would drink several of these! Hop aroma was nice - very hop forward. The aroma is so inviting to the hop head in me, the bitterness and malt are on point... I would definitely buy a 6 pack if it was available for retail. Thanks!

Wee Heavy

Scored: 35 and 36 for an average total of 35.5

Comments: A very good beer that matches style guidelines... This is a very nice example that I would drink a pint of.

Biére de Guard

Scored: 23 and 27 for an average total of 25

Comments: Aromas / flavors like mushrooms and chestnuts! ... very memorable, glad I had the chance to try it.

So, the IPL is a new offering and I'm excited about it. I plan to tweak that one and brew it a few more times to dial it in.

The Wee Heavy and BDG have both done better in the past, but that's ok... Any given Sunday if you know what I mean. Comments were informative and the more specific ones in the aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, appearance categories will help in the refinement of both of these beers. That's the part I really like about competing... The scoresheets are invaluable!

Congratulations on some solid scores. :clink: So they didn't say what kind of mushrooms, huh. I could see earthy, musty being nice in a BdG.

I agree that the score sheets are a great learning tool to work with to make better beer.

Heck, all the results I've seen on this forum have been great. I'm afraid to put my beers up but keep telling myself I should one day.

You should, your beers are great too!

Part of what I hope happens with ths 'Results' discussion is to encourage folks to give t a try and get some real impartal feedback from qualified judges...

I think it can be a real confidence builder as well as offering good advice on improvement!
