Memorial Day Adventure
Well, look what showed up in my yard today! I was doing yard work, carrying a bunch of weeds to a bigger pile and I heard some buzzing. Looked up and saw a huge cloud of bees around a weedy sapling in what will be my vegetable garden. Pretty soon they're camped out there and I'm freaking out. I thought they would chase me away from home. An internet search and a few phone calls later and this wonderful woman came to my rescue. She was so patient with those bees, very gentle. She loves them and was very happy to get them. She's been chasing them all over my suburb the past week but every time she's gotten where they've been reported, they've already flown off. Apparently now they were so tired and full of wax they couldn't go on. Feral bees looking for a new home. She estimated around 12K-15K bees there. So now they are with somebody who knows what they need, and nobody got stung at all. It took her about 1.5-2 hours to get them all (well, most) in a hive box so in the meantime I learned an awful lot about bees and bee behavior. She was a fount of knowledge. She likes homebrew too, but couldn't have any since she was driving. Exciting day.

Awesome! How cool is that Amy?
And be sure she gets some of your next batch and make a deal with her for some local honey from your foster bees that you can use for brewing and what not...

Cool bee(n)s.
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Holy cow that is quite a story Alb. I'm glad no one was hurt and that the bees found a new home. Thanks for sharing!

Way cool, thanks for the pics. When I was a teen, delivering papers, there was a swarm in my neighborhood. I just walked through, I knew they weren't dangerous. After a while they settled into a clump of trees.

Re: Memorial Day Adventure
Well that was exciting for you. Hopefully she will give you some honey in a year or two.
Re: Memorial Day Adventure
You have to ask her for some of the honey from those very bees and brew something with it. Then the story will have a second happy ending.

That's cool, I like bees. We always had them as I grew up, love fresh honey. The only thing that scares me about bees is when we lived in the south west, you have to worry about the africanized bee strains, those get nasty.
I was driving a truck one day (here in ND), fully loaded running 80K lbs when a swarm flew right into my path. The whole front of my truck was solid bee/honey/wax. Talk about a serious mess..... it was so bad I could not see out the windshield..... first time I feared I was going to wreck... could not see very well. Was not fun!

That's quite an experience. I'm glad you were able to get it handled properly. Good for you, good for the beekeeper, good for the bees.

One of my co-workers is a beekeeper and he was telling me of this very thing that happened to him three weeks ago. The workers took the queen to a tree several properties away from their hive. He went there, gathered the queen and most of the workers and put them back in their hive.
