Another beer that just magically showed up at my house and asked to be drank.
This one poured a bit more orange-hued than the Recreation Ale, but had less hop presence to it. The aroma was there, but it wasn't the bright, citrusy explosion that the Recreation Ale was. Carb level was high which made for a good head so it presented very well. Interestingly enough, this one seemed a little one-dimensional to me and fell a bit flat. I think it was the bittering addition that did it for me. It seemed to overpower instead of complement the other additions and the malt.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad beer by far. It paired well with the tri tip I had on the grill, but it just didn't stand out or "pop" like some other beers have done recently.
As always, I enjoyed drinking something new, though. Thanks Jeff.

Re: Terrapin Hi-5 IPA
I tried this one today as well. You pretty much hit my points. It was basically your typical IPA but didn't stand out. Good and worth trying but it ended just bitter. Not overly so, but with a bite but not expected.
I would think the draft version of this would be improved.
I would buy this but it wouldn't be my first choice.
Terrapin has been surprising to me. For the most part, I give them a huge thumbs up. I like their rye very much and I love that that try new things.
Thanks for sharing this with me Jeff.

Re: Terrapin Hi-5 IPA
Your welcome guys. Terrapin puts out an ok line up of beers, just nice run of the mill, nothing to really stand out. These were actually given to me by a friend. He had bought a six pack of each, had one and gave the rest to me, so I thought I'd share. Now Terrapin does some Side Project Beers that are tasty.

I agree, if they were local to me I could see my hitting their tap room based on these two. I really did dig the Recreation Ale.
Re: Terrapin Hi-5 IPA
I like Terrapin a bit. Their standard beers are solid if unspectacular, but their side projects are quite nice plenty of the time. I poured for them at the Science of Beer fest last year, so I took home a case of Recreation (that I only recently finished). The special release Moo-Hoo and Wake-n-Bake are both fantastic.

Re: Terrapin Hi-5 IPA
This sounds like the same reason why I don't like 21st Amendment Brewery's IPAs. They are more bitter then flavor.Kealia wrote:Interestingly enough, this one seemed a little one-dimensional to me and fell a bit flat. I think it was the bittering addition that did it for me. Re: Terrapin Hi-5 IPA
Yeah, I've seen the same thing from a number of places that just bitter the hell out of a beer and call it an IPA (not saying Terrapin's was to that extreme).
21st Amendment is one of them, although I like plenty of their other beers IIRC.
