Sprouting Grains at Home

If anyone has access to the BYU channel on TV, I see this coming Tuesday, June 3, I think, there's a cooking show called Chef Brad Fusion Grains, at 3 pm CST, where he's going to show how to sprout barley. This might be something interesting. I know some folks get upset when the same post is in more than one place, but since I really don't want anyone who's interested in sprouting their own grains to miss this, I'm gonna post it in two places and beg forgiveness.

Alright, so I only got a few hits on YouTube with "Chef Brad Fusion Grains".

One of them was this video.

They cook oats and rye, and add fruit and cheese for a salad.

Would that make a good beer? Malted Oats, Malted Rye, Barley Sour Malt (as close as you get to adding cheese to beer), fermented grapes...

The biggest problem with brewing this would be what to call it.

Actually, it's a cooking show all about grains, and he does some really cool stuff with that. This is just an isolated incident where he just happens to be sprouting barley to use in other dishes after it's sprouted. I just figured we could take away whatever we could learn about the sprouting itself and then use it for our own brewing purposes, namely drying it into malted barley. But you probably already knew that and were just pulling my leg for fun. Anyway, I wish I knew how to upload TV shows onto You-tube. I could probably figure it out but don't have the equipment to do it, anyway. I saved the show to my DVR, and if I ever figure out how to move it from there to the internet, I'll do that. I'm sure it would require at least a TV tuner for the computer, but that's not in the budget right now. Heck, the rent is barely in the budget by the skin of my teeth as it is.

I put my tremendous technology skills to go use.

I Googled BYU since I never heard of it. Went to www.byutv.org. Put "Chef Brad" in their search box and a whole list of programs came up. I was able to watch the beginning of one, so it's likely they are all available.

Not really. If I can get my brewing rolling again soon I would give that brew a try. I was most serious about what I would call it.

I would start with trying to make a gallon of wine with table grapes and some added Agave. It would be my first try at this and a one gallon batch is easy to fool with.

Then home malt some oats and rye, and make some homemade sour malt from raw barley. After this is fermented rack it onto the wine and bottle it. It would need some sort of low bittering hop addition.

Sounds like a cool project, actually. I really like being creative, too. Seems like I've been chained to a treadmill of work, eat and sleep for the past 45 years and can barely scratch the surface on my creative desires. But retirement is just around the corner, and I expect to indulge myself in a whole lot of creative activities. Anyway, I digress. I hope you get to do this brew, and when you do, I hope you share the results, too.
