I'm so sorry for your loss, Doc. Losing a beloved pet is extremely difficult, but I'm glad you were able to say goodbye to Charlie and be with him when the end came.

Thanks, everybody. You don't know how much your kind words mean to me right now. I have loved all our dogs, but Charlie and I had a special bond. Even when he was too weak to even lift his head, he wagged his tail every time I petted him. I know we will wait a while, but we will get another dog. Coco is grieving too, and we want her to have a canine companion. My wife is having a hard time with it as she was with him when he started vomiting the blood. I was still at work, and have handled that with humans enough that I think I could have comforted her better. At least we were both with him when he died.

I tried to post a note of support last night Doc, but was too overcome with grief for your loss.

Most of my thoughts have already been echoed by our other Borg members.

I took my best friend to the dog park today which is one of our favorite things to do... However today's visit was a bit melancholy for me... My friend is almost six, and I know someday we will have to assist him as you assisted Charlie yesterday.

Like you and others, we have done this many times before and it never gets easier, but in cases like this it seems it's always the best way to help them along.

Your courage will be your strength, not only for you, but for your wife and Coco as well... And your love of Charlie will live on until you can meet again!

My sincere condolences Doc.

Sorry to hear that Doc. It's sad to lose a pet.

Sorry for your loss. Our family pet of 10 years, Golden/lab/ husky mix was recently diagnosed with cancer and has an inoperable tumor. We are just enjoying everyday we have with her until see starts to show signs of getting sick. Then we will have to do the same as your family. It feels bad we have to put live our pets.

Oh man, so so sorry. The are just dogs, but they own our hearts. Tough choice to have to make, but you did the right thing. My story when someone asks why they live so short a life compared to us is that they already know how to be good, it takes us much much longer to learn.

Sniff.

One of the hardest things I ever had to do was to put my Sunny down. However, just minutes before she went to eternal sleep and let out her last breath I saw this look in her eyes that seemed to say "thank you, I am no longer in pain for the first time in a very long time." That right there turned a very sad day into something a little brighter.

Here is a photo of Charlie in a happier time, with my youngest son. This was taken about 2 years ago. While I miss him like crazy, I am cherishing the memories of this wonderful dog. Thanks again to everyone for your support.

it's obvious that Charlie was a genuine smooch pooch. A very rare breed.

Again, sorry for your loss.

After we lost Pretzel, we decided after 3 months to get another smooch pooch. It doesn't heal the hurt of loss, but it opens a new love for a new pet/family member.

Oh Doc, I am so very sorry for your loss! How heartbreaking! It is always difficult to lose a family member, furry or otherwise.
