Repeat Offender IPA

Post by BlackDuck »

Here is my session IPA recipe. Hopfully ( ), I can get to this on Memorial Day. I have very tentative plans set for that day, hopefully they fall through and I can get this done. I'm sure you guys will comment, and I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Just reviewing my recipe for tomorrow and was comparing what I pasted above from my desktop to the one that I sent to the cloud so I could get it on my iPad.

Get this....the IBU's changed. The one above from my desktop has IBU numbers associated with the steep. It is telling me that I'm getting a total of 10.2 IBU's. However, the recipe that clouded over does NOT associate any IBU numbers from the steep, so the one on my iPad has an overall IBU rating that is 10.2 lower.

Seems BeerSmith has a glitch, so which one do I beleive?

I rarely use the cloud but I would post that error to their forum or email Brad. I'd follow the desktop version as it's been around much longer.

So do you have the May update on your iPad version?

There were changed made that might impact that...

I don't think I have the May update...I thought that was for BeerSmith Mobile, I'm using BeerSmith Lite, which is different. But I'll check to see if there is an update. I haven't been notified through the App Store that there was an update available.

In order to make sure the recipe is right, I think I'm going to delete the steep additions and adjust the hop schedule to get back to my original IBU level, and also put some more in the dry hop to make sure I get the aroma I was looking for too.

EDIT. Just checked my version of BeerSmith Lite and I am running the most current version.

Chris, I went thru just about every recipe of mine on the cloud vs the desktop version vs the ipad lite version and I don't see any discrepancies at all. I'm not sure why you are. I know this isn't helpful but I thought I would let you know anyway.

Not sure what's going on either. I've already adjusted the recipe a little so it's no big deal. I'm ready to go for tomorrow.

I've got 4 racks of baby backs on the smoker so I don't have time to figure it out now, but I'll look into it later this week.

4 racks? That's barely enough for me.
Almost ready for brewday tomorrow as well. Gonna hit 90 so this is a test run for the rest of the summer only it'll take longer since it's a double batch. Hope I have enough propane.

All finished. Color on this one should turn out pretty good. It was a nice orange color, but cloudy. For some reason I did not get a real good break on this one so I transferred a lot of stuff to the fermentor. Nothing the cold crash shouldn't take care of later. Flavor was pretty good, I could definitely get the bitterness too, so that's a huge plus. OG came in at 1.046, just touch higher than the predicted 1.044. So if this comes down to the predicted 1.010 FG, I'll have a 4.7% ABV IPA!!!! I actually thought about adding a little water to it to bring the gravity down so I could keep the ABV at 4.5 or under, but decided to let it go. Now I wait!

Nice Chris. It's nice to have the option of adding water to dilute rather than coming up short, huh?

Today was dry hop day. FG was at 1.010 so this will come in at 4.7%. Color was nice and clear, but that will be ruined after the 4 ounces of dry hops does it's thing. Flavor seemed to be fairly smooth with a nice medium hop bitterness bite to it. I'm not sure if it will be as bitter as an IPA should be, but no matter, I think it will be good no the less. And at 4.7%, mission accomplished. Here's the hydro sample
