North German Altbier

Post by BigPapaG »

Needed to brew today and not much time so I did an Extract with Steep for this one...

3.0 Lbs. Golden DME
2.0 Lbs. Pilsener DME
1 Lb. 6 oz. Munich LME
8 oz. CaraMunich Malt
3 oz. Pale Chocolate Malt (oops, grabbed 3 oz. Chocolate Malt instead, darker and roastier)
3 oz. Aromatic Malt

0.5 oz. Magnum (14.7 AA) @ 60
0.5 oz. Horizon (11.1 AA) @ 60

0.5 tsp. Yeast Nutrient

2.0 pks Wyeast 1007 German Ale Liquid Yeast

Pitched at 4pm, no activity yet but this yeast seems to take almost 12-15 hours to show up to the party.

Moved this to secondary today and took a gravity sample (taste test)...

After only 11 days, the SG has dropped from 1.058 to 1.016 so I think I'm almost at FG... Or within a point or two for sure...

I'll give it a few more days to cleanup then I'll bottle.

The taste was fantastic! Enough initial bitterness to let you know it's beer, followed by a malty, slightly caramel/chocolate/aromatic yum...

This is gonna be a great drinker once carbed and cold!

Looks great!

Finally got around to bottling this today...

Finished at 1.015 so I was right, was pretty much done about a week ago.

Couldn't get to it anyway until today.

Bottled 24 and dropped the rest into a keg.

Should be able to pour from the keg by the weekend since I'm force carbing it.

The beer looks and tastes as before so I'll provide a first pour this weekend if possible.
