Is my beer ruined?

Yes BrewDemon and Mr. Beer kits are pretty darn easy but sometime you need a little help from the Borg to get you on the right track. Post your questions here!

Is my beer ruined?

Post by Capitals82 »

Hello again BeerBorg experts! So far I've been making great beer. I've made 3 batches so far and just finished making my fourth batch, however, I was up waay to late last night brewing and when I finally poured my wort into the fermenter, I stirred it up and put the lid on but FORGOT TO POUR IN THE YEAST! Yikes!

It's only been sitting around for about 7 1/2 hours so far just hangin out with no yeast in there. I just now poured in the yeast. Will this be OK? is the batch ruined? Has anyone done this before and gotten funky/off flavors for having the wort just sit there with no activity?

I've never done it, so I'm not sure about the possibility of any off flavors. But there is only one way to find out....and that is to proceed as normal. I would think your chances of having a bad beer turn out from this is most likely very slim. I've heard of brewers cooling their wort overnight before pitching yeast with no problems. I'm sure it will turn out just fine!!!

There's a good chance that your beer will be fine.

Pitch it and proceed.

Awesome! good to hear, yeah it took forever to chill the wort (Wort Chiller purchase is in the near future) and by the time it was ready it was 1am so I just wasn't thinking clear.

Let's hope it turns out ok. Thanks!

I use a "no chill" method of cooling my wort, in which I cover the brew pot with sanitized aluminum foil,
smash the top back onto it to create a seal and put the fan on it overnight.

Knock on wood, all the batches I've done this way have ended up fine.

I believe your going to be OK, especially since you had it sealed in the LBK, provided you used good sanitation!

I agree with everyone. Beer infecting microorganisms can't get into your LBK with the lid on, unless you squeeze it so that it blows out air and sucks it back in when released. They don't "crawl up", they only float/fall down. So as long as you followed good sanitation practices you will more likely then not make beer as intended.

Regardless, you will still make beer that will not hurt you. Even if it did get some bug in it that makes it taste a bit funky or look a bit funky, as long as it ferments, it's still safe to drink. So relax and enjoy the ride and see what you get.

Glad to see fermentation is underway. It takes a lot of F-ups to ruin a home brew. Most people ruin their beer during racking/bottling with the infection growing as the brew ages. But even bad home brew is better than Bud, Miller, Coors.

Really disappointing answers. Not one person said you had to bottle it up and send it to them for a safety inspection...

Yup. Turned out great! Had first tasting straight out of the LBC the other day and it tastes absolutely amazing! American Wheat ale with a slight hint of cherry aftertaste. Bottling begins in a few days.

Thanks!
