Much of the same thing is happening here in Columbus too. There are a lot of nano/micro breweries here also. And I think we haven't even seen the real effects of the bill the made it easier for the little guys to get into the business. Give it a couple more years and I think we'll see a lot more.

The downside is that there will be more failed start-ups, which is always a little sad. Still, that's the price of free-market capitalism; no one is guaranteed success. And it's preferable to a monopoly and/or a system that allows fewer choices.

One trend I see happening is there are several startups out there focusing on "trendy" brews, while there staples are mediocre at best. The most sucessful around here focus on styles, not flavor dujour, like hybuscus watermellon etc. One place took over a John Harvards and lasted less than a year. another is barely hanging on, not sure how, as it is usually dead... While these "designer" brews may be good to draw in another segment of beer drinkers, I see them going the way of Zima...

I agree. Any brewery or brewpub needs a base of drinkable beers that are not exotic.

Here is a pretty cool example of a new spot in the Cleveland area. It's actually very interesting. They "employ" people for a short time to show them the ropes on how to open, operate and run a small brewery/tap room. A very cool idea indeed!!! Too bad I can't take a 12 week vacation and work for minimum wage.
