The Great Trub Exbeeriment

Awesome article, very detailed and interesting. Seems like the opposite of what I'd expect, apparently dumping the kettle trub into the fermenter results in a crisper and clearer beer. It also lowers isoamyl acetate (banana) and ethyl acetate (nail polish remover) esters.

Yeah I'm one of the lazy ones. Been just putting it all in the fermenter from the start but I put my hops in a nylon bag I'm sure some gets thru but I never saw any green in the cake when harvesting

Nice to know my laziness has paid off! Being pretty frugal and always having my hops in bags or a spider (and not wanting to clean additional equipment after a long brerw day), I usually just dump the pot especially if I have a secondary planned.

When I do a BIAB these days, I just dump most of it in too. Because I don't rack it, I literally do pour it right into the fermenter and only leave behind the little bit that gets left on the side of the pot. I've never had a problem with it. It helps to aerate the wort too.

So hurray! Except for when I'm making a beer where I want more Banana, now I know to try to keep those ones cleaner LOL.

Basic Brewing Radio had a podcast where they did a similar experiment (in associate with BYO Magazine, I believe) and got the same, "contrarian" results: more trub = clearer, cleaner-tasting finished product.

Interesting read. Guess I don't need to be quite so anal when I rack to the ol' bucket. No more whirlpool attempts for me!

Tried the whirlpool thing once, didn't work for me. Resorted to straining the last 1/2 gallon or so through sanitized 5 gal paint strainer bag.

I never had consistent luck with the whirlpool either. Maybe once or twice, but for the most part I didn't get a good cone. I've been using my auto siphon and running that through a sanitized strainer.
