Ok, Borg .... Tweaking around a new IPA recipe and wanted to throw this out there for comments, etc. Thinking about adding some flaked rice to perhaps add to the dry side of the IPA we are looking to go with. Thought adding the rice as it doesn't add any flavouring or body to the brew. Also, going to look to mash at somewhere near 148-152 for 60 mins. Any thoughts, comments?
Here is the recipe (10 gallons) so far:
23 lb. 2-Row
1 lbs. 60L
1 lbs. Flaked Rice
1.5 ozs. Magnum - 60 Mins
1 oz. Perle - 30 Mins
2 ozs. Cascade - 10 Mins
4 ozs. Cascade - 7 Mins
Estimates:
OG - 1.073
FG - 1.020
SRM - 7L
IBU - 58.4
ABV - 7.3%

It's not something I would do. I'd add 1.5 lbs of corn sugar if you want to dry it out.
I know flaked rice has to be added with the mash but I'm not sure I've seen a recipe for an IPA that uses it, almost exclusively lagers. But if you want to do something different as a test, I'm not sure I'd do a 10 gallon batch.
Finally, I'd skipped the 30 minute and do a 20, 10 and 5 and or 0. Just my personal tastes, YMMV. I've got a bunch of Magnum I've got to get rid of soon and am going to give it a shot in an IPA. Seems like it's only good for a bittering addition.
Let me know what you finally decide to do. You do have me curious.

Rice was just an idea, I see what you are saying and I happen to agree. Just wanted to kick it around. May just leave it out all together.
May leave out the 30 minutes addition and go with those additions. ... Not certain there though.

I too would use corn sugar to dry it out. I usually mash from 150 to 152 for my IPA's. I think it gives a good fermentable wort without being too sweet, yet it allows things to dry out nicely....especially with corn sugar added.
And I agree with Paul on the hop additions. I like a good strong bittering charge with the rest at 15 minutes and less with a lot of dry hops. Good luck my friend.

If I'm brewing an IPA, those are two of the first 3 guys that I'm asking to give me advice, for sure. I'm sure the 3rd will wander in here shortly, too.

The other two have already given great advise. Like them I've stopped adding anything from 60 to 20. I've not noticed any change between those two time points. A nice neutral bittering charge at 60 (unless I'm looking for dank) then everything else at 20 or less with a nice dry hop.

FWIW, I've only brewed one IPA and one IPL but I was extremely happy with the 60-minute addition of either Magnum or Warrior and then hop-standing the rest. Nothing else added during the boil at all.
