Yes, an easy way to harvest yeast (dump trub?) would be awesome!

Suggestion would be to use a standard sized spigot so IF something does happen to it or it becomes contaminated it would be REAL simple to sport on over to the LHBS to get a quick replacement should a vat of cooling liquid be waiting to be poured should something happen (even if it is dropping it down an unreachable drain or setting it down and not remembering where the *bleep* you left it).

Yes…we have a 1 inch standard threaded opening at the bottom (i will be testing different dumping options) and an upgraded spigot for this and our little demon fermenter. And yes…it will come with a base that is almost identical to our smaller version.

Since your already upgrading spigots, is there any chance of adopting the trub dump to the smaller fermenters? I love the LBC's I have, but I'd buy all new small fermenters with that ability.

Hey Sam. Any updates from your testing? Really interested to hear how things are progressing.

Had to make some minot adjustments…and now we are looking at upgrading the plumbing (for upgradeability), it may add a few more dollars but I think it will be worth it in the end. What do you guys think?

These new Demon fermenters are looking pretty cool, but I see a few design problems (in my opinion):

1. Internal threads on the dump port - these will be impossible to fully clean and sanitize. An externally threaded nipple (with a smooth interior) would be a more sanitary option (and allow for fitting inexpensive PVC ball-valves).

2. I like the tri-clamp dump, but see a few problems - there are still threaded connections for the tri-clamp adapter; the tubing seems too small (1/2"?) to allow effective removal of the trub. Can you have a 1.5" tri-clamp molded right into the plastic? 1.5" butterfly valves are not too expensive ($65 on Amazon - probably cheaper wholesale). That would be the way to go - competely sanitary and wide enough to drop the trub easily.

Just thought I'd give you my 2 cents...

The threading is one of those things we are looking to change. Although the tri clamp flange built directly into the fermenter was my first option…the manufacturing process made this impossible. Plus if you ever dropped this on that plastic flange it may break or disfigure and become unusable.

Also, the dump opening here is 3/4”, but it can easily be replaced with a 1 inch butterfly valve (see image). And, you can find inexpensive ball valves with male and/or female threading.

Thank’s for the input russki!

Sam, I think 3/4" is fine for the dump diameter... With the presure of five gallons of beer above it, I believe there would be enough flow to get most of it out without wasting the beer.

I am a little hung up on the internal threads, but I suspect a small brush (toothbrush) and some sanitizer could do a good job.

In thinking about how one might design an externally threaded opening, I keep getting hung up on the strength of the openng and whether or not one might induce cracks by overtightening a pvc or stainless ball or bufferfly valve onto it, or even stripping the threads.

I suspect if a support sleeve was molded on the inside that might aid in the sanitization and strength factors, but would leave the outside threads to be added as a part of the molding process... And since they would be molded, they would be softer than stainless and more readily stripped.

So, after that analysis, I think I like what you have so far!
