Speed Racer
RedBEERd brewed up a Racer 5 clone today and I was there for back up. Piece of cake. It's getting easy when you're used to working together and the left hand knows what the right hand is doing.
We missed our OG by a few points but who the frack cares, it's beer and it's Speed Racer.

Re: Speed Racer
The only follow up I can give right now is that it's gurgling like a SOB! It started literally within hours of capping the bucket Sunday about 3....then 6am Monday morn it was bubbling literally nonstop. Fortunately paul suggested we use a hose and bottle instead of an airlock for the first few days because 1) we actually got 6 gals of wort (usually we hit maybe 5+) and 2) we had a lot of yeast. No way would an airlock have handled that well. As of noon today its now gurgling every 1/2 second so it's still going balls to the wall.Inkleg wrote:Nice, looking for follow ups on this.
Temp started at about 65 then actually went up to about 70 late yesterday before I threw everything I had at it and got it down to the mid 60's now. She's gonna stay there until I'm sure she's cleaned up. Likely will switch to airlock tomorrow if she slows down.
Of course, we made a slight variation to the recipe by adding a 'tad' more hops late and at flame out and of course we'll add a 'tad' more hops to the 5 day dry hopping.
But I wanted something not quite as hoppy as my usual just to keep me happy during football season till it gets cooler to make something (likely BLACK for our friends who like that stuff )
Re: Speed Racer
Out of curiosity - what's the recipe for this look like? Glad to hear the yeast is going to town!
Re: Speed Racer
While I have always read that Bear Republic, like many, many breweries, uses sugar in R5, so many people have sworn by this recipe (if its on the net, it's always true!) that this is the one we decided on.We added 3/4 oz cascade at flame out and will add a bit more to each dry hop shown as well. Not a huge amount that will affect the IBU's but will hopefully give us the nose we like and never seem to get enough of.

Re: Speed Racer
Well hell, there's nothing in there to not like. I didn't realize they classified it as an amber. Interesting....
I actually saw their Pale Ale in the store the other day and almost grabbed one for my mixer but the sixer was already full. Guess it has a spot in the next one.

Re: Speed Racer
The amber part is likely PEBCAK (for those who don't know, "Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard") as I think my Beersmith defaults to amber. It's an IPA so, my bad.
Was that the XP Pale Ale? I'm not crazy about it but its certainly not bad. Their Hop Rod Rye is a fav of mine.

Re: Speed Racer
No, this is replacing the XP Pale Ale. I'll have to check Untappd to see if I tried while on the beer tour back in February.

Yum - I love Speed Racer the cartoon & I love Racer 5 Beer. I made a Speed Racer brew once called "Race Car Driver". Here's the label.

Re: Speed Racer
No problem if you want to use my label. I don't copyright my stuff.
Re: Speed Racer
Recipe please. I love that beer and am curious as to what is in it.
Re: Speed Racer
Roger, the one we used is shown in post #5. As mentioned, there are a few floating around forums and a few mention sugar being used which is possible but many more have said this recipe is damn close. We'll see in a few more weeks.

Re: Speed Racer
My goal is to compare it to a bomber of real Racer 5 several weeks down the line (after it's carbed well but before the hoppy aroma loses it's luster. Only problem is, we can no longer get R5 here in La. I was in TX early July and brought home a few but the one remaining will not be fresh by the time Speed Racer is ready so I may have to employ some friends to visit Kroger's and bring me some in Sept/Oct.
Regardless, we're a ways off but I'm very much looking forward to how it turns out. It took off like a Banshee with the starter paul made and finally last night quieted down so in another week and a half, I'll take a reading and see how it looks. Then it's dry hopping time.

Re: Speed Racer
I can get it just about anywhere out here. Drop me a note and we can coordinate getting a bomber or two out there.
