Is it Possible??

Post by D_Rabbit »

To convince my wife to let me turn the downstairs bathroom (we have 2 full and 2 half in our new place) in to a beer fermenting/storage room. The room is about 4 ft wide by 8 feet long. It has an AC vent in the top of the ceiling so I put a thermometer in the room the other day to see how cold it was in there. I have the AC set to 70ish and I have the vent in that bathroom closed because no one uses it.... who needs 4 friggin toilets in a house?? The thermomstat read 65 degrees!!!! I sprung the idea on her yesterday and it was not met with a resounding HELL NO so I think there may be hope! If I get the thumbs up I will removed the toilet but leave the sink and the toilet plumbing in case we want to sell at some point and I can put the toilet back in. Would fit a few chest freezers very nicely!! Crossing my fingers :)

No! She will say no and you will lose. :)
Seriously, I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me get a small freezer to cold crash and ferment in our utility room. I think I'm making headway. Good luck with your trial!

If you do remove the toilet, you MUST plug the pipe with a rubber expansion plug.
(Also known as a wing nut trap plug.)

Else, there will be sewer gas issues in the room (nasty smell, explosion hazard).

Remember, for toilets there is no trap below it (which you couldn't keep wet anyway).

The toilet itself is the trap that prevents gas from flowing up and out of the pipe.

They look like this...

Thanks Much for that insight Papa. I highly doubt she will allow me to go that far but it is fun thinking about it :)

Might it be possible to leave the terlet in, but construct a box to fit over it, so then you have shelf space, or at least a horizontal working surface?

Leaving it in there means no Kegerator in there. Enough space without it for that but not by much. I will probably just use it as a fermentation area since it is tiled, in case of issues.

Remove the toilet, empty it and store it.

Edit: Assumes you already shut the water supply valve off and it's not leaking...

Clean the wax and 'stuff' from the drain pipe flange (rubber gloves, putty knife, lots of paper towels)

Then insert the plug and tighten the wing nut by hand until the plug is in there tight...

Then tighten it another turn or two with a pliers.

Drop a square of plywood over the hole, using two screws near the edge of the original pipe opening, catching the floor...

And you are done!

And you can assure SWMBO it's completely reversible by just buying a new wax ring for the toilet!

Does it have a tub? If so you could build a box that covers the tub and make it a work table, you could even put a small sink in the table and run the drain into the tub to drain out.
