I Have Made A Decision

Post by Chuck N »

First, a little back-ground:

I think that I have stated in the past that my little home-town is, for lack of a better term, "beer ignorant". There are few if any more than myself in town that enjoys good craft beer. And this with one of the the best craft beer breweries in the nation (MOHO) just twenty mile away. And another "up-and comer" (again MOHO) fifteen miles the other way. Oh sure, we have the obligatory Lienenkugels and Alaskan Brewery seasonal beers on tap and some fairly good crafts in the bottle but the prevailing sentiment in the local watering holes is that the BMC breweries are the only ones worth buying at the bar. They are, after all cheap and they "get the job done" which is to get the customer blitzed.

Well, last night our local Fire Department, of which I am a member, held a first annual street dance. This time rather than going to one of the bars to hold the fund raiser and split the profits with them we did it all ourselves at the Fire Hall. Band, food and a beer garden. I didn't have anything to do with the planning of the event. Us "old guys" left all of that up to the newer guys and we just helped out where we could. Now I didn't expect that there would be any Summit beers or anything like that but I at least expected some bud on tap. Nope. Bud Lite, Coors Lite and MGD Lite. Lienie's Summer Shandy (malted lemonade IMO) in the bottles and Mikes Hard Lemonade (same opinion) in the bottles.

"KEEEEERIST"! I said. "Couldn't you at least have gotten some Schells?"

I was told that no one would drink "that crap" and they got what was going to sell. And sell it did. We ended up going through ten 16 gallon kegs with the Bud Lite running out first then the MGD Lite followed closely by the Coors Lite.

But now to my decision...

With really no other choice I took a glass of the MGD Lite. I choked down almost all of it but couldn't bring myself to drink the last swallow or two. I ended up drinking a couple cans of A&W Root Beer for the rest of the night. But as I threw that glass of crap into the garbage I made a vow to myself that I would never again drink a bad beer no matter what the circumstances. If I go into a bar and they don't have at least a "decent" craft beer I will just order the soda pop and be happy with my choice.
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Life is too short to drink crap beer!

Good for you Chuck!

Here's an idea... See if you can bring your own to events and local pubs...

Or, if not, see if one of the pubs will order one keg of (insert your choice here) to see if it will sell...

Tell them, if it doesn't see in a reasonable amount of time that you will buy the remainder!

Note: You can always sit around in the pub, drinking it and recommending it to everyone that orders a beer near you!

Right there with ya... IMHO it's not worth the money or the calories to drink what I don't like, so in most cases I make that same decision. There are scattered occasions where I go back on that, but for the most part, I will drink water if I have no options of my liking availab.e

Was it served in a clear plastic glass, in the sun? As soon as I see those, I make the decision to drink water. BMC tastes bad enough to me, (I know, some people like it, I'm not bashing them) but serving it in a cup that will let it go skunky in 10 minutes shows complete beer ignorance. I won't drink it. For goodness sake, at least serve it in red party cups! I'm with you, brudder: Drink the soft stuff, have a good time, and let the crowd spend their money how they please, for a good cause.

I agree, Chuck. You can't choke down crappy beer simply because it's beer. You're capable of of drinking other refreshing beverages. Why give your hard-earned cash to purveyors of beer you don't want?

Chuck, I am so sorry that you had to suffer like that due to the poor tastes of others. You tried and that's what counts.

Such a pity. Still, that stuff is the drink of the masses. Even free, I refuse to drink it.

But just imagine poor Chuck's dismay.

It would be like going to a pot-luck dinner, anticipating all these lovely homemade dishes, and finding out that everyone made Kroger's Mac'n'Cheez. Props to the folks who put hot dogs and/or red bell peppers in it!

Yecch.

At the same time, I have a bottle opener on the keyring that holds my house keys, so I'm never without it when I leave the house.

I was never a Boy Scout (and I sure ain't one now ;) ), but I believe in being prepared.

Dave, I carry a pocket knife clipped into my right pocket. In my left pocket sits a Swiss Army knife, not only with a bottle opener, but corkscrew as well.
You never know when a bottle of wine may attack and one should be prepared. ;)

Hate to say it Chuck but the young guys were probably right, That's what the general population wants to drink, and it will sell.
I went to a annual big party blast last night that a couple farmer friends of mine put on, a top local band and all the food you can eat and all the free beer you want. They had Bud Lite on tap with plastic cups, I took my own beer and a "GLASS" glass. I enjoyed the food, the band and the BEER. I was up at 6 am this morning with-out a Bud headache.

I agree, life is too short to drink crap. I've probably had a handful of MGD in my life, last one in college. I don't drink it, nor any Miller product. I refuse to drink Bud or Bud Light. I will drink Coors, but Coors Light is a waste.

I drink what's being served when at an event. While I certainly prefer craft beer, I'll drink light beer on tap if that is what's available. It's not great, but it's way better than soda. And after all, if it's f-n close to water, why get water? :)
