typical of my step daughter. My wife packed a lot for her, gave her advise on what she'll need. I tore my car apart to make room, loaded and drove her, her BF, and my wife to college. We unloaded as she walked aimlessly. Worked our butts of, all she could do was complain to her Mom. Mom gave her tips on how to organize, met with attitude. I was smart, stayed in hallway and built stuff. Bought everyone lunch, when time to say good bye, no hug, kiss or thank you. just a see ya...
I elected to stay home today while wife and BF went up for freshmen conatation (or something like that)

The kids today don't have parents any more. They have DVDs and DVD players in their living rooms, in their bed-rooms, in the kitchen and in the car. They have remote controls. They have computers and the internet and video games - counsel, PC and on-line versions - and they have smart phones.
Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into
Are awake through years with transferred touch and go on glowing
For long years.
And for this reason some old things are lovely
Warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them.

Parenting, whether 50 years ago, 20 years ago, or now is still the key IMHO to raising a responsible child. Yes, things have changed and distractions are many, but at the end of the day if you parent well you get better results. Neither of my sons would ever consider a response to an adult like was made, especially a friend of the family.
There is a new phone app that prevents phone usage by a child (except for 911 or calling the parent) if the child doesn't call or text the parent when they want, i.e. the parent says "fine, don't answer my call, you can't text or call anyone else until you do). The fact that someone had to create this is amazing. If my sons didn't text/call me within a reasonable time, there butt is mine. A few years ago my youngest was supposed to be home at a certain time (from college locally) to go somewhere. No show. Called, text, nothing. Hour goes by, nothing. Called friends, nothing. Drove neighborhoods looking for his car. He finally surfaces, he was out with friends drinking, slept on a friend's coach, sleeping soundly, friend let him sleep when he went to work (he thought he'd wake him up - operative word "thought"). We now have all cell phones set to ring through certain numbers regardless of the situation.
I also laugh when parents don't know how their kid is doing in school or college, etc. REALLY? They won't tell you the truth? Mine don't have a choice. For college it's easy, you may be an adult, but I pay the tuition.

Re: Is it just me?
You guys are all talking about kids behaving like that.
The real problem is that an awful lot of adults these days lack a sense of respect these days so we would be hard pressed to ask them to raise their children properly.
I wonder how many kids even know what the word "polite" means.
It is most unfortunate that media see fit to proliferate the issue by broadcasting every scrap of unseemly video they can get their hands on. I so look forward to Christmas time when we get to watch hour upon hour of shopping mall stampede video.
