How I spent the last 6 days

Post by Kealia »

I can tell you without reservation that an Easy Jack Session IPA before and after a ski run is the perfect way to bookend it while spending time at the lake.

Now I have some reading to catch up on.

Oh, it was! I didn't take any homebrew with me so I didn't have to worry about keeping bottles or hauling kegs. It gave me a good chance to drink the mixer sixer that I picked up last week too!

Nice! Looks like a blast. Wish I knew someone with a boat these days.

If it makes any of you feel better due to the drought the lake was REALLY low and just a few boats caused the water to be churned up and pretty choppy (read: crappy for skiing). We had to do runs as soon as it was legal to be on the lake or right before it shut down to 5 mph for the evening to ensure good water.

On a related note - we set up camp on Sunday afternoon and played in the water the rest of the day. Friends came up and camped in the campsite next to us and we had a great evening catching up and just having fun. Monday afternoon while on the boat we noticed smoke from over a ridge which quickly turned into a huge plume. This is right outside of Yosemite where earlier fires had just finished burning so we were concerned. Over the next few hours the smoke grew and we saw spotting planes, a DC-10 or 747 from CalFire dropping retardant and multiple helicopters in the sky. About 7:00pm our campground host came by and told us it was a fire started in the nearby town of Oakhurst that was quickly at 200 acres and that we were on evacuation notice.
We pulled our boat out and packed up 90% of camp so we'd be ready to go on a moment's notice if they couldn't contain the fire. Fortunately we slept through the night and the next morning we were informed that the blaze had grown to 600 acres but was at 30% containment so it looked like we'd be OK. We monitored scanners for the next few hours and decided we'd be OK to unpack and re-launch the boat but there were a number of beers and unsettling hours overnight while things played out.

The firefighters did an amazing job of containing the fire in these severe drought conditions and we were lucky enough to not have our vacation ruined. I should note so that I don;t sound completely selfish or self-centered that our main concern was the nearby town and the people that DID have to be evacuated. Some of them actually ended up at a group camp site near us to watch the blaze from the lake and we took them down some food from our dinner that evening since they were rushed out of their homes. In the end, a few buildings were lost but no homes nor lives.

While we did take them tri-tip, beans and salad I didn't take them any beer. I'm a good guy, but not a saint ;)

You young guys and all your shenanigans, us old guys like our hips and want to walk at the end of the day. Does look like fun though. :)

Sometimes it's OK not to take beer. They'll never brew themselves if you're giving it to them all the time. ;)

One more clip as I play with the GoPro camera and MovieMaker to add sound clips.

Man, I wish I was still a young gun. It's been 22 years since I had a 21 year-old body but I'm going to play hard until I can't play any more!

The only thing that gets easier as you get older, is sitting on your ass. Waking up can be painful though.

I didn't think it was the waking up part that was painful.....I always thought it was the GETTING up that hurt.

Man, that takes me back to when I was a kid. During the summer we went boating 2 - 3 weekends a month to Monroe Lake in Indiana. I got pretty good at it myself, BUT, I could not get the single ski down. I could not even get up with one ski, I would intake more water than a kid should have.... o-well, it was a blast, those were the days. That was also the same place I saw a guy's wife launch their car instead of the boat while backing down the ramp, but that's another story... LOL (no one was hurt)

That was nice of you taking some food to the folks. Y'all were/are some very generous ppl, the world needs more like you helping out those in need!
Life is short, live it to it's fullest!

Looks like fun. Glad the fire was out quickly and you got to stay.
When I was still young enough to ski we lived in west Texas where they skied on the Rio Grand river and in irrigation ditches. Notice the "they" and not the "we".

Our lake is so low it has only one boat ramp left open and even though it happens to be in our own little community whole weekends go by without the sound of a single boat or jet ski.

Thanks for sharing the videos for those of us in the dog days of summer who kneel three times a day in the direction of our air conditioners. :p
