Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
I'm am going to brew a small batch of a Cascade heavy IPA using the whole hops that someone gave me. I would like to use them wet ( not dried ) but I am going on a business trip and might not be able to use them fresh. I want to give the guy who grew these hops a 12 pack of a really hoppy IPA. I have a ton of Cascade pellets that I can also use but I want to use as much of his crop as possible.
My last IPA used:
Pale Ale 2 row 81.6 %
Munich 12.2 %
Victory 6.1%
I'm just curious to see what the borg recommends as a base for a hoppy high IBU IPA.
I'm going to brew extract on this brew because I have not been happy with my all grain brews and need to treat my water. I don't really know how to do that and want to give the hop grower a good brew so extract is a better bet.

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
Since you said extact, I'll stick with extract and what can be steeped...
For an IPA, I like:
50% Pils LME or DME
32% Pale or Golden LME or DME
10% Munich LME
5% C20 or C40
3% CaraFoam
If you are going to push it into 2XIPA territory, then I like:
82% Pils LME or DME
10% Munich LME
5% C10
3% CaraFoam
Obviously, there can be many variations / additions...
A little chocolate malt will give it a redder hue, (as can CaraRed or CaraMunich)... a bit more chocolate malt takes it into brown IPA territory.
Or, some Midnight Wheat or Chocolate Wheat or Carafa II can take it into a Black IPA, add some Roasted Barley (very little) to make it a bit more Cascadian...
Let's see what others like as well!

I haven't done extract in a long while but Papa's on target I think. I love what Munich does to my IPA's though you don't often see it in many these days.

I'd really like to see the all grain recipes as well as any extract based ones.
I'm just brewing this batch as an extract to make it an easier and quicker brew day

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
Lately, I've been trying to keep them simple. About 90% 2 row and the rest with some C40 or C60 and some Munich or some wheat malt. Sometimes I throw in a little Carapils.

Having had BeerLord's Maharaja, I can tell you firsthand that it is Awesome!
Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
My idea is to use my friend's Cascade hops as so that he can see how they taste in a brew.
I'll put the Maharaja IPA on my to do list !

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
I was going to send my CHAOS IPA but I noticed the recipe is a bit on the screwed up side so will need to check at home for the actual version. That uses Nugget and Cascade. If you are looking for a Cascade beer and not necessarily an IPA, Centennial Blonde is something I try and keep on gas as even the BMC drinkers aren't "offended" by it.
All Grain Version
Beer Style: Blonde Ale
Batch Size: 5.5 gallons
Original Gravity: 1.040
Final Gravity: 1.008
Bitterness: 21.5 IBU
Boiling Time: 60 Minutes
Color: 3.9 SRM
Alcohol: 4.2% ABV
Ingredients
7.00 lbs. Pale Malt (2 Row) US
0.75 lb. Cara-Pils/Dextrine
0.50 lb. Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L
0.50 lb. Vienna Malt
0.25 oz. Centennial (9.50%) boil for 55 min
0.25 oz. Centennial (9.50%) boil for 35 min
0.25 oz. Cascade (7.80%) boil for 20 min
0.25 oz. Cascade (7.80%) boil for 5 min
Danstar Nottingham Ale Yeast
Directions
Mash at 150 degrees for 60 minutes. Sparge with 175F water to create enough wort to reach 5.5 gallons after the boil. Boil and add hops according to the schedule above. Chill to 68 degrees and pitch the yeast. Recipe assumes 70% efficiency.
Fermentation
Ferment at 68 Degrees for 10 days before bottling.
Extract Version
Steep 1 lb. Cara-Pils/Dextrine at 155F. Replace pale malt, vienna malt and crystal malt with 5 lbs. Extra Light Dry Malt Extract and boil according to directions above.

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
I'm like Beer-lord...a huge IPA fan. And could not agree more with his comment of keeping the malt bill simple for IPA's. Too many different types of malts usually do not allow the hops to really come through and shine. However, English style IPA's tend to me more malty than American style IPA's. So if you like a little malt sweetness in your IPA's (like the English styles), then there are quite a few malts that will give you the sweetness.

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
This is a recipe using Jamil Zs IPA from Brewing Classic Styles as a guide.
I want to use Cascade because that is what I have been given. I won't have a large amount. I might end up with 3 oz dried whole leaf. I will dry hop those.
Is the malt bill to complicated? I think I'll go partial mash.
How do the hops types and additions look?

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
Personally, I see nothing wrong at all with that recipe. I say, BREW ON!
I don't see what yeast it calls for but am curious.

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
I agree....that malt bill looks great. And so do all those hops!!! But, the dry hops say for 0.0 days. I am guessing the original author just missed the adjustment for the number of days. I would suggest anywhere from 3 to 5 days for the dry hop. You could do up to 7, but I wouldn't go any more than 7 days.

I'm surprised by the # of crystal 10 but that's what he has.
The hop additions were my varieties using his times.
The dry hops were just my guess.
Am I going overboard with the amount of hops?
Is that even possible?:)

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
I'm not the right person to ask about too much hops. I stuff my underwear with them I like them so much (no comment Jeff)
I don't see any C10 in the recipe but the 15 is 1 lb but it's a very light lovibond so that's not a problem.
And, 59 IBU's is right in the middle of the IPA/IBU range so your hops look right on to me.

Re: Whats Your Favorite IPA Malt Recipe ?
In my opinion....you are no at all overboard with the amount of hops. I love the schedule you've got them on. Most of your bittering is coming from that one 60 minute addition. And the rest are 10 minutes and under, which is awesome. This should give you a really nice flavorful and aromatic IPA. Which is exactly how I like them. I think you've got a good recipe here.
