Airlock liquid disappeared overnight.
Read that it could be a crack in the airlock causing this. It happened once on this batch so I switched airlocks to another one that's never had an issue. Happened again last night.
Any way to stop this? Don't like the idea of star san solution mixing directly into my beer.

Re: Airlock liquid disappeared overnight.
Apparently it's a lack of fermentation (low ph again doh) and ambient temperature change overnight creating a vacuum. Also, something is growing in it that kind of looks like the start of a pellicle, maybe airborn infection when I opened the bucket a couple days ago.
I didn't get a good look this morning but I'll check it out tonight. If I see any mold it's getting tossed.

You have my sympathies for the variety of issues. The starsan-in-the-beer issue may be a minor one, but a solution can be to use vodka in the airlock. Some may say to drink the vodka instead, but I buy cheap vodka for this purpose.

Blowoff tube every time! It's happened to me before where either the vacuum creates sucks the liquid in, or the fermentation is so aggressive that it overflows the airlock. After so long, I finally just stopped messin around and put a blowoff from the start.

Eh it was only 13 dollars in grains. Plus I have some wild brett in the house or something, it's significantly improving my other batch with the too low ph.Foothiller wrote:You have my sympathies for the variety of issues. I'm just taking it all as a learning experience on my path to perfect Berliners.

13 dollars will buy a lot of cheap vodka for your air locks.

Heck, when I'm out of vodka, I use whiskey... Never been an issue!
Also, when I have an open LME, I pour a bit on top before putting it in the fridge... to protect it from bad things!

I dumped it just now. It looked like this:
My other one looks good still, down to 1.033 so dropping very slowly. It's still bubbling every now and then, taste is marginally improved.

Haha you aint kiddin, it was all ropy too. I remember reading pedio will cause ropy wort and brett will clean it up but I was too afraid to taste it and just tossed the whole batch. Ah well only 13 bucks in grains so, not a huge deal.

I wanted to re-paint the out side of all my exterior doors and the ten year old paint I took down from the attic looked just like that.
I didn't drink it either.
